Outer Limits of 95 E300D Tranny

I may be looking at a 95 E300D with just over 300K. Apparently tranny works perfectly. According to a W124 expert in our circles, if that's the case it MUST be a replacement tranny, since 270k is about the outer mileage limit he's seen.

Anyone agree or disagree?

I hate the thought of a tranny with 300k on it....but love the thought of a tranny with a lot less.

It really depends on the type of miles they were i.e. city or freeway and service history.

Mine failed at 244,000kms/151,000miles due to start and stop city driving here in Sydney. It had NEVER had a fluid/filter change. The car had a full Mercedes Benz dealer service history but they never thought it necessary to change the fluid!

If your transmission goes into reverse without delay, goes into forward without delay, changes through the gears smooth and crisp without flaring then it should be alright.

The 'common' (for one of a better word) weakness's of this 722.435 box are a flare between 2-3 and a hard 1-2 shift. Reverse was the first gear I lost but not without prior warning- it was slightly delayed when engaging reverse gear and made a ticking noise.

As I just posted very recently in regard to a question on a 2-3 flare with a '95, my '95 has 393K on the original tranny. I do have a 2-3 flare, I have replaced the K-1, but it only firmed the shift itself and did not affect the flare.

Nonetheless, I have been driving for at least 100K with this flare. I back off between shifts, actually backing off the throttle causes the shift to occur, and I have no flaring when I do this. Someone else mentioned doing the same.

For info I'm running Amsoil synthetic, and due to my own dumbassedness I went a good 100K without a fluid change before putting in the Amsoil about 75K ago. Pan was perfectly clean when I changed it.

So I am a believer in the life of these trannys.

Rgds,
Chris W.

The only tranny in our family that ever failed was on an unconcious for ALL types of breakdowns==engine / AC etc. problems Cadillac, the worst & costliest POS on 4 wheels ever!

Rumor of one Chrysler MinVan, but that's it - the other Chrysler and Jeep trans. were flawless!

MB and Ford trans. IMPE are in fact bulletproof - serviced and treated properly......one million + miles on (5) of them and counting sez so.

Depends on how you find it after driving it for 10K miles, after servicing it?
