Which Amsoil for 617

There seems to be several types, I think 15w40 marine diesel oil looks good for 175k - 200k mile 617. What says the pros?

There are some things that just seem to have no consensus even after endless, sometimes heated, debate. These include

Oil
Coolant
Transmission Fluid
Air filters (e.g. K&N)
Oil filters
Refrigerant
Tires
Fuel

As long as the oil meets the basic specs of MB, it's probably more important to keep it clean with regular changes than to fret over a particular brand.

Marine it is, then. I will report back. I can get it as a preferred customer/dealer type for 36 bucks a gallon, not much more than autozone shelf synthetic. The additive package with amsoil looks pretty impressive. I'm going to use it in my Cummins 6BTA's in the boat and my Yanmar powered generator when they get broken in a bit.

I tried 5w40 blend once and she leaked like a beaatch.

I saw some european formula Amsoil stuff today.... it said it was specific for Mercedes and BMW. 5W 40. I did'nt have time to check if it was for diesel, but I think it was. $12.49 for 946ml. x8 would be over $100.00 just for the oil.

I saw that too on their website, mechanic friend that just did a major teardown on a pair of 2 stroke Detroit diesels, 671's that have used amsoil 15w 40 forever and he said the inside of the engine was in unexpectedly great shape and wear was extremely minimal. I'm going to order the oil in morning, pick up at distributor and get Mann filters, etc. and do the change tomorrow. I don't know how the guy afforded the amsoil for the detroits, they hold almost 6 gal each.

Now, I did see that the amsoil diesel additive was not rated so highly compared to the optimax stuff.

Checked my invoice, paid $26.40 a gallon or $6.60 qt.
Nice picking it up at the warehouse, no shipping and no sales tax.

I agree with the Marine diesel oil because it has high levels of phosphorus and zinc, which is necessary to keep older technology engines from premature wear (though you can buy the zinc and phosphorus additives separately and put it in the oil of your choice). The Amsoil diesel oil for 2007 and newer engines doesn't have the necessary zinc and phosphorus levels, so definitely go with the Marine version.
