I too have had the odd moment like that - I don't understand why the pistons outstrip the cost of a re-manufactured caliper. This is just pricing for "customers" of course...

Very odd indeed.

The pistons are chromed steel, instead of stainless steel and the water attacks the chrome plating and causes it to peel away, such was the case with my pistons...

You can thank good 'ol hygroscopic brake fluid for this performance.

This car, like all my others since 1983, will be retrofitted to Silicon DOT 5.

It's funny, for as long as we have been using it I have to laugh when I read all the horror stories about it. The pedal is just as solid as it was with DOT 3 or 4 in our experiences, including use in our dirt track cars and 1/4 mile oval NASCAR short track series cars, where the 'experts' advise against its use.

We first used it in an El Camino shop truck in 1981. At the time, IIRC, only General Electric made it and it was purple in colour. 10 years of driving and several relining of the brake's friction surfaces, and you could still see right to the bottom of the master cylinder and when you bleed the calipers/wheel cylinders, it always came out clean. The internal hydraulics looked like new as well when we finally inspected them.

I didn't use DOT 5 in the Benz duing the 2005 rebuild because my supplier was out of it at the time, so I ended up using Castrol LMA DOT 4, IIRC.

Of course, it has only been changed once in 88,000 miles (miles accumulated since the 2005 rebuild of the entire car) but I have seen lots of pitting and corrosion in systems that had the fluid changed yearly.

The ONLY exception to my DOT 5 rule is my 2001 Ford Mustang (Supercharged of course) with ABS. Because ABS requires a different viscosity, I use ATE DOT 4 Class 6 PN# 706402 in that car exclusively and change it every year.

FWIW, anyways...

And, by the way, the only 'better' fluid (as they say) is ATE Super Blue DOT 4. However, it is interesting that Super Blue has almost identical wet and dry boiling performance as the ATE DOT 4 Class 6, for less than 1/3 the cost. ..

For a higher viscosity fluid, similar to DOT 3 and 4, the ATE Type 200 has a viscosity index of 1.400 (identical to DOT 3 & 4) with exactly the same wet/dry boiling point of ATE Super Blue, again at less than 1/3 the cost!!!!

Just for the record, DOT has a VI of 1.500, DOT 4 a VI of 1.400, DOT 4-Class 6 a VI of 700 and both ATE Type 200 and Super Blue have a VI of 1.400 respectively...

Good idea. And not just because they cost $44 each - I'll be checking my new ATE calipers before they go on the car.

Hopefully the pistons are, at the very least, hand-picked, if not re-chromed.

Dream on!

Who has time for that these days?

Bang 'em in quick and see if they pass a pressure test...

Got new Balo rotors with a stone-ground friction surface. Painted between the flutes and other non-contact areas with black high-temp epoxy....

Calipers arrived today. They are marketed by Centrix and the tags indicate they were rebuilt on January 23, 2012. When I pulled them apart, I was really surprised.

Not only had all 4 pistons been re-chromed, but the caliper bores had also been fitted with stainless sleeves, something I wasn't expecting for a $48.00 re-manufactured brake caliper.

They didn't come with pads, but did come with springs, pins and hairpin clips.

Not bad!!!

I discovered something about my brakes.

I am in the habit of washing my 617 once a month and have done so for many years. The tiny hole in the master cylinder cap can introduce a lot of moisture if you are usings a hygroscopic fluid. Even covering the cap with plastic won't stop the moisture because I have conducted this test with fresh brake fluid.

My solution was two-fold:

1. Go back to DOT 5 silicone that I have used in all my cars (other then the Benz) since 1981.

2. Drill the hole in the cap oversize to accept a epoxied-in small hose barb and attach a submersible chain saw fuel filter to the tubing. (the filters are only 3/4" long)

Problem solved!!!!

Not bad at all - in fact that's an amazing amount of work for $48

(Though I bet they split the caliper in two - which upsets some people here!!!)
