cell phone antennas

Hi,

My 83 300D has a cell phone antenna at the top center of the rear window. I kind of doubt that it was an OEM installed option, as I dont knwo if there were lots of cell phones in 1983. However, a number of the 300Ds around here that are like mine all have the same antenna on them. What I would liek to know is if anyone else who has one of these through-the-glass antennas knows wha type of wire goes from what Id guess was the cell phone end to the antenna. If it is coax, Im in luck, as I could use it with my CB radio, even though it is a bit short... Regardless, I am interested in where the end of the cable is. There is no mount for a phone in the car, so that doesnt help me, and Ive looked all around the console, etc. and cannot find the end that I guess would be connected into the phone. If anyone has had experience, or perhaps one of these similar antennas, Id like any info on where I might look for the wires. Any info is most appreciated. Thanks

JMH

Hard to say

It could have been installed in any number of ways...the wire from the antenae went to a receiver...an electronic box about 10"x5"x1.5. In my car this was located beneath the rear seat on passenger side. yes it was a coax type cable. From the receiver, the wires went forward under carpet, under passenger front seat, and to a connector attached to the hump near the base of the front seat (pass. side). Phone was attached to console on the passenger side.

Good Luck

Mark

My Calif. 83 300D turbo also had the factory installed cellular phone. OKIE if I remember correctly. The antenna cable ran from the inside rear window connector around the inside top of the window gasket and down to the control (?) box under the rear pass. seat on the right side. From there the wires led to the trans hump and to the handset/cradle in the center console.

I think that most if not all 83's had "factory" installed cell phones installed.
