I'm only at 326,000. I guess I need to get out and drive more.

Haha I was thinking the same thing. I am so OCD about how my cars run though that I think the oil-burning would drive me nuts.

the SD odometer will last a very long time if it's not parked outside, and it's driven regularly.
they fail from sitting in the sun. the SD plastic gears just disintegrate with humidity and heat. garaged, and driven often, they likely would outlast the car...
it's the 123 odometer that fails from wear... that dang potmetal gear just starts slipping.

I bet if there was some way to verify the mileage on our cars, MANY of them would be over 500K... once the odo stops, most owners keep right on driving them, then they put in a newer odo/cluster and sell the car... then the next seller does the same thing, and then the next...

it's SOOOOO hard to determine mileage on these vehicles... they just look SOOOO good, and are so solid, it's super easy to lower the miles and have a buyer believe it.

My SD was a one owner and I got it with 279K on it, I drove it for 3 years HEAVILY after the odo failed before I found this site, and learned somewhat how to fix it (dieselgiant's page only explains the 123's odo...) THEN I put in a cluster from an 83 with the 120mph speedo and drove it another 60 or so k, THEN I loaned it to a census reader for the summer, THEN I loaned it to my buddy in PA (he drove it there and back) for a year or so, THEN I gave it to my helper for working with me when I had to clear out my yard of cars and debris... and he's driving it now for the last year....
I'm SURE it's over 500K...

I also have a customer who bought an SD in Asheville that had 575 on the odo when he got it, and has been driving it for the last 3 years or so... still going strong.

Looks like he was a member of the MBCA forum under the name "gravytrain", but he quit MBCA and quit posting late last year.
