240D Clutch Problems

Hi all, I am soliciting advice on the clutch problem below.

1) A couple months ago, I was driving when all of a sudden I realized the car would not come out of gear because I lost the clutch. I pulled into a parking lot and parked it over night. The next day I came back and found that I could put the car in gear and drove it home.

2) After searching here, I realized this was most likely the slave or master cylinder. I changed the both master and slave and the car worked like a top.... for about 200 miles... then the same problem happened.

3) I attempted to bleed the clutch, but no matter how much I tried to bleed the clutch I couldn't build up any pressure. Eventually, I decided to take off the slave cylinder, when I did this the bottom flange that mounts to the transmission came off.

4) I got a new slave cylinder and installed. Bleed it and it seems like I am getting good pressure, but the clutch still does not work.

Each time I bleed it, I would have my friend pump the clutch and then I would crack the bleeder to spit out the brake fluid plus bubbles.

I am think I still have just not adequately bleed the system, so I am looking to borrow a power bleeder and bleed it from the slave cylinder up. I am hoping I am not getting into problems internal to the clutch. I am looking for advice on how to troubleshoot this problem if further bleeding does not fix it.

The way to bleed these Clutches, is from the bottom up. Pumping the Peddle and opening the Bleeder doesn`t work.

The FSM method is to connect a hose from the R/F Caliper bleeder, and connect it to the slave Cylinder. then pump the Brake peddle. this will circulate the fluid through the system from the reservoir to the caliper, Slave up to the MC and finally to the reservoir.

If you go this method, it would be wise to flush the brakes system so you are not putting dirty fluid into the clutch system.
Even this way is a PITA to make work.

there were three HP ratings on the OM616...

1) Not much power
2) Even less power
3) Not nearly enough power!! 240D w/auto

Anyone that thinks a 240D is slow drives too fast.

Take a look at this, Like Charlie said, the clutch must be bled from the bottom up.
