There are new developments all the time. Graphene foam batteries, for example.

Can't deny an electric smart car is pretty cheap and would probably be a fun little machine to zip around the city in. ~70 mile range and its like $199 a month...
IF this ever happens I will but an electric car as my commuter car but until then give me my fossil fuel any time.

There are already vehicles on the market that can speed charge to 80%+ in less than 30 mins on a high output commercial charger. Considering how long they have been available, this is a great leap in the tech already. Give it another 5-10 years and I bet we will have cars with 350 mile range that will charge in under 15 mins, or much much better batteries that give very long range from a couple hour charge.

I see at least 1 or 2 teslas traveling the 400 miles between SF and LA every time I make the trip. Tesla put up free fast chargers (1 hour to 100% battery) at Harris Ranch about half way between and people are driving these cars long distance.

lol, I was just thinking about these cars and I wasn't sure what I thought about them. Then the power goes out here in the phone office and all these alarms start going off. I think I need to pick my heart up off the floor as it has jumped out of my chest...

It won't be free charging forever. There is no way they will let these cars tear up the roads (that's all cars and trucks do you know) with out paying some sort of tax. That's part of the reason we can't use off road diesel in our cars (probably pollution too). I freak out when my phone is about to die and I can't find a charger. I can't imagine looking for a place to charge an electric car when the battery is getting low cause you forgot to keep an eye on the charge level when you are miles away from home. You know when everyone seems to show up at the gas pump all at the same time and you have to wait for someone to finish? Imagine electric cars with there 30 min charge times. you could be there for an hour before you are 'topped off'. Not for me...Not yet.

We'll all be forced into it at some point anyway though.

Considering the electricity costs about 2 cents per mile to power a Tesla, I think most owner can manage it and the company can afford to keep giving it away as long as it promotes sales. But you're right, some states like WA and VA have already begun to tax EVs for the very reason you mention.
http://www.plugincars.com/politics-usual-washington-states-100-ev-tax-doesnt-make-sense-125919.html

Imagine the fine when they dip your battery and catch you using "off road" electricity.

psh, car deals are way better than that, at 1.9 % (what MB is currently offering) and 66 months (standard loan nowadays) its only $1,015.63 (in michigan) a month.

If fuel was actually $15 a gallon, it would cost 58 cents PER mile in fuel to drive a 300SD getting above average 26mpg. Driving it 2k a month would be over $1100, more than the payment on the tesla...then you add in maintenance...way more expensive. Not to mention once the tesla is paid off, the savings become enormous.

3.66% isn't even as good as some people are currently getting with a foreclosure on their credit.
