300td wagon broken rotor

I was driving down hill heard a nasty noise and then grinding. Took off back tire and low and behold the rotor completely cracked all the way around. Can I drive it to the parts store to get a new one?

I would not.

likely they won't have the rear rotors anyway. call around first. you should be able to get them delivered.

definitely not

If it is already making noise it could fail causing unknown damage. Lets hope nothing else is wrong.
What do you think made it crack? I have never heard of this before. it sounds like it got overheated somehow. You better figure that out. Brake discs don't just crack for no reason. At least bleed the brakes well and check the calipers well while your in there. Check them for proper movement and return. It could be a emergency brake issue. Something probably got that rotor very hot.
Also you want to do both rotors and pads at once. Keep the brakes balanced.

Gwenn, you are not all that far from the Foster, Columbia or the Vancouver PNP`s. the rear Rotors on the w116, w123, and w126 are the same at least up to 91. I see almost new ones sometimes quite often.

I agree that driving with this bad Rotor is dangerous. The other side could be as bad? Be good to do a real good inspection of your whole Brake system.

How long have you had this car?

I saw one on a 126 gasser last month in a PNP, that the R/R Rotor was worn down so thin, it broke off from the "Hat" part of it. was a ring held on by the Caliper and Pads.

Note:

I now realize the OP has a 87 300TD W124. the W116, W123 and W126 rear Rotors will not fit this chassis.

However if there are some W124`s in the PNP`s, they may fit your TD.

This is a rare failure. I would look at the caliper function and also check that wheel for wheel bearing failure which might allow too much wheel hub and rotor movement.

I've seen it plenty of times.
it happens when the brakes are not changed when they wear out... steel on steel tends to eat rotor material quickly. also, it happens when the pads are changed, but the rotor is not.

Whenever I see something like this, I think of John's wire coat-hanger brake pad fix

My 77 300d had the disk/disk hub separation issue when first acquired. I suspect it is no longer as common as it once was. Based on no reports on site for a long time. The casting is thin there.

Rotor

I replaced both back rotors, all is well.. I need advice on how to fix the throttle. The plastic piece on the bracket is broken. I can't keep the idle adjusted, and it has stuck wide open twice, lucky for me I noticed the petal gets floppy right before it happens.

I had the rotor fail in the same way on my 240D. I limped it five miles down the dirt road to where I worked and brought in a replacement rotor and changed it there.

On the linkage, how about replacing the broken bracket?

Since you didn`t list the year of your 300TD, I was assuming a W123. Looked up your info and some past Threads, you have a 87 300TD, a W124.

You should post the info in your Signature.

Iam adding info to post #4 that those Chassis models are not relevant to your W124.
