84 300D Locking Ring

I have 84 300D and the key broke in the ignition which means we cant remove the bad tumbler and put in a new one. Anyone know if you can use it without the locking ring? Car has now been sitting since Oct with a full tank because of the bad tumbler. Any help would be greatly appriecated

is there a way to reinsert the key, turn to position 1 and then insert a stiff wire into
the provided hole far enough to force down the locking tab? which will allow the hardened ring to spin off.

just did this last week on a friend's 300sd.

I am assuming you cannot rotate the Tumbler to the proper spot.

In order to turn the Lock Ring the Key and Tumbler have to turn to the same position that you would use to remove the Tumbler in.

There is a block on the Tumbler that Rises into a notch in the Steering Colum Lock Casting above the Tumbler and a recess the Block rises into on the Lock Ring (that Sleeve).

If yo cut the Sleeve on both sides that would remove the Sleeve but you still would not be able to get the Tumbler out. So I don't see a the point of doing that.

Drilling the Tumbler out releases the Tumbler and the Lock Ring/Sleeve and preserves the Lock Ring/Sleeve.

In the pic I circled the Notch that part of the Tuble Block rises up into.

You could split the Retainer Ring/Sleeve with 3 lengthwise cuts on opposite sides but if the Tumble Block will not go down yo would need to cut off part of the Casting that keeps you from removing the Tumbler.

To cut you can uses a Pneumatic or hand Held Cut off Wheels. The Pneumatic ones are cheap but you need an Air Compressor.
The Electric one from Harbor Freight is about $20 but only when it is on sale.
For about $5-$10 you can buy a Mandrel to hold the Cutoff Wheels and use them in a Drill Motor. However, this is one time you are better off with a fast turning 1/4" Drill Motor instead of a slow turning 3/8" or 1/2" Drill Motor.
Wear Eye Protection a Dust Mask and besides dust the sparks thrown are hot.

Oil Gauge should work, or you will have a black wet oily mess.

Did you plug in the large plug on the left side of the Cluster?

Speedo is really a mechanical connection on early 80's W123. Make sure that the connection didn't come undone while you were working on it. Would probably have to be manually removed to stop working unless speedo itself just decided to give out.

Did the tach work reliably before your repair was attempted?
