Battery issue

85 300td. Duralast battery is two years old. The other night, I turned the key to roll up the windows and forgot about the key. It was turned to the right, same as the position to warm up the glow plugs. I plugged in the battery tender and went to bed. The next morning, I checked the tender and the little red/green light was out. I checked the cockpit and discovered the key was turned. Battery was dead.

I jumped it with my 95 e300d in a minute or so and went on my way. I drove 60 mph for 30 minutes then fished for 5 hours. Car started right up after fishing.

Last night I put my other battery tender on it and this morning the light was still red and the tender was really hot.

Is the tender just working too hard to charge the battery? Should I try my 2 amp trickle charger?

Minders cannot possibly handle glow plug discharge. Likely it's bad. Also your battery is shot, your alternator also is badly damaged. Never start a car with a dead battery! The alternator will fry itself trying to recharge.

Doesn't the glow go out after a minute? 24 hours later, car started fine. Will alternator issue manifest later? John, did the 30 minute ride yesterday not charge the battery? How was it able to sit for so long then start with no prob? Not doubting your expertise, just want to learn.

a minder is not meant to charge up a very low battery. it's more meant to give it a small bump up, and keep it charged up when there's a small small drain over time.
