As was said above, if there was a problem with the vacuum the pedal would be hard....there would be no power assist, you would have manual brakes....you have a stuck caliper, so the caliper is stuck....easy as that....time for new calipers....must do both....and replace rotors...both! Not sure but the brake hoses could also be bad...

Release the bleeder screw to see if the caliper loses it's grip. If not the caliper is sticking.

Here is what is important to your issue.

Some Facts About Brake Hoses:
#1. The industry standard average safety life of a brake hose is six years. FYI data SAE: J1401, J1703, J1705, J1873, J1406, J1288, J1403, J1833, J1402.
#2. Brake hoses deteriorate from the inside as well as the outside.
#3. Moisture is absorbed into brake fluid systems through brake hoses.
#4. Contaminants in brake fluid act abrasively on the inner wall of brake hoses.
#5. The brake hose reinforcing fabric deteriorates through expansion and moisture.
#6. High operating temperatures contribute to the deterioration of hoses.
#7. Brake hoses swell with age and restrict flow.
#8. Generally all brake hoses on a vehicle deteriorate at the same rate, So all hoses should be replaced if one is found to be faulty!

Brake hose failure mode:

#A. Rupture (burst hose) = age, exercise (too many miles) or impact are the typical cause.

*B. Partial internal collapse = the inner ply becomes damaged/detached acting as a partial restriction and/or one way valve.

#C. Full internal Blockage = the inner ply becomes damaged/detached acting as a plug = brake pedal still feels good but there is no brake application.

Brake is a safety system = issues can kill you or others!!!

So, the front right side is still getting hot, I ordered a caliper and hoses for both sides..I will also flush the brakes....

If this doesn't work I should then change the M C ?

If you are going to change the hoses and calipers wouldn't it be a good idea to change out the two rotors as well?

- Peter.

stuck caliper/

I noticed there is a lot of play in the steering wheel and the car pulls to the right while driving. If i replace the caliper the hoses and replace the m c, and flush the system, what next? could it be wheel bearing?
I need this car running.

my 87 300td is in the barn waiting for me to tear apart the throttle mess, it gets stuck wide open now when i drive it, NOT safe!!

rotors too

Peter, Yeah it probably would be, but im not made of money..I just got this car this week and working at one issue at a time..

The rotors do look a bit rusty but not horrorible. The pads looked good they have even wear..

The rotors are only about 30 bucks each if purchased thru this site, though I do understand the financial times being difficult.

Rusty rotors aren't good....I imagine your car has sat for some time. If you don't want to spend the money....then do like I said, flush the system first and see if the old caliper comes back.....

I get your not made of money but if you don't replace both calipers at once, then you will have issues.....if you don't replace rusty rotors you will have issues....and mind you if you get in a wreck, and they find out your brake system cause the wreck.....you'll get into some serious trouble...

The pulling of the steering wheel and slop is due to worn steering components....you will need to do an over haul, new tie rods, new steering damper, idle arm and drag link/center tie rod.....don't use uro parts!

new rotors 78 300d

I will replace the rotors soon... I get my parts local so i can fix the problem the same day.

calipers, hoses, mc, fluid= 250.00 im lucky to be able to do that right now..
I got the car for free, so,i know thats a cheap fix for such a beautiful car..

I know all about rusty rotors, my 87 300td back left rotor cracked into two pieces, i replaced all of them on that car, LAST week...

Im getting a little overwhelmed, im doing the best i can..

When funds are limited or you just for whatever reason do not want to invest them in auto parts especially if a lot are needed. Pick and pulls and some auto salvage places can be your friend.

You never know what you will find in them. Obviously some things should not be re used but many things are quite safe to do so. Kind of a matter of judgement and common sense.

Is the 300D light green? It looks beautiful.

gwenn 06-13-2013 01:27 PM

300D

Hi, yes it is light green. She is beautiful!!!And dainty, a ladys car for sure;) Drives so nice and doesn't rumble as much as my 87 TD wagon..
Getting ready to change caliper, hoses...

And barry12345, these old diesels mercedes are not super common at the salvage yards here...I did find ONE 78 300D at pick n pull and plan on going to stock up on parts as soon as she is back on the road...

My 87 TD is almost impossible to find at a pick n pull- I'm looking for a TE that might work, cuz I need throttle parts...
