1981 300SD Bendix or ATE?

Guys - I cannot remember which brake caliper I have - Bendix or ATE. The keeper is a spring like coat hanger and not the flat metal keeper. So is this Bendix or ATE?

Thanks.

The brand name will be embossed on the side of the caliper, visible through the wheel.

My 1978 SD has the wire clips of which you speak and the calipers are marked Bendix, but both ATE and Bendix can have either anti-rattle clip.

It was the 433rd 300SD produced in 1978; a very early production vehicle..

OK, so I will have to inspect through the wheel before I order one. Thought the Bendix and ATE had different anti-rattle clips. Maybe not.

Bendix is suppposed to have spring.
ATE is supposed to have 'star' shaped clip.

Anyone else verify??

Just be careful buying a caliper or overhaul kit by the appearance of the spring....

My car had a mix of both with Bendix calipers!!!!

Well, looked on line at Pep Boys site, carefully selected a right rear caliper - Bendix. It said Bendix on the side. Decided to have Pep Boys stick it in since I was busy. They called back four hours later and said that it was not the correct caliper. Bendix, yes. 81 SD, yes. Right rear, yes. But it would not fit. They sourced around and finally found one today.

Who woulda thunk? I thought all Bendix calipers for an 81SD were the same.

Guess not.

They are. Either their parts lookup is giving the wrong part number, or the wrong part was in the box.

I had this experience when I was shopping locally for a Bendix for the front of my 300d. UAP ordered one in at a great price. Wrong caliper in the box when I showed up.

Now that I think about it the bleed screw was quite long, maybe 3/4 inch. I think my original bleed screws are significantly shorter and are not hexagonal like the new one. Seems like the original bleed screws almost look like a grease fitting or am I dis-remembering?

I ended up with A1-Cardone calipers. They have horrible quality control. The 1st would not release. The 2nd was the wrong side, the 3rd was rear which is smaller than the fronts. I eventually got 2 that matched and worked. Good reasons to buy locally.

Unbelievable. Pep Boys got another caliper and says it was the wrong one again. Now they are trying to locate the correct one. They say (and I do not believe) that there are numerous different ones for the 300SD and most are slightly different. Sounds odd. Mercedes is usually pretty good about standardizing things unless they can really make an improvement (at least back in the 1980's). So Pep Boys has another one coming on Monday. Hope it fits.

Not sure how many improvements MB made in the 300SD over about ten years but you would think maybe 81-84 or 85 would all have the same master cylinder, either ATE or Bendix, but otherwise the same design.

TYL604..........Have you looked at this list?

1981 Mercedes-Benz 300SD Sedan - Brake Hydraulics - Page 1

Maybe it is Pepboys that is the problem?

Charlie - looks like they only have ATE rear right calipers. Mine is a Bendix. I am shocked at the price of a new one from Mercedes - $295. Rebuilts are about $65 plus core. Will be interested to see what price Pep Boys gives me - was supposed to be about $65. Right now I am just hoping they find one that fits. Still suspicious that a Bendix caliper spec'd for a 1981 300SD did not fit per Pep Boys.
