Why did I never have a diesel before?

New diesel owner here...

After finally deciding to go with a GLK250 BlueTec, I can't figure out why I never got a diesel before. Sure it's a tad sluggish on the highway, but it has 370 ft lbs of torque and gets 34 MPG. Makes as much noise as my 328i and no smell/smoke/etc. Gotta say that I'll always have one after this guy.

Also, my wife's a pretty big fan of the "D".

Congratulations on the purchase. Too bad MB refuses to stick that engine into the E class wagon with RWD. Then they would really have something.

I honestly am surprised I can keep the tires on the road with this thing, even with AWD. My wife's been getting ~25 MPG... I think she's been having too much fun.

That mpg seems about right for city driving.

My E320 Bluetec gets 25-26 in town and 38 when Hwy cruising.

Diesels are OK, the new ones are even better, but with modern electronics, the gas motors kill them for performance and acheiev close to their mileage numbers.....

I've driven the new BMW V8 Turbo Diesel and it just bored me to death. I mean, its OK for a diesel, but I wouldn't enjoy living with it on a daily basis....FWIW

I'd like to see a gas motor get >30 MPG on the highway while getting 370 ft lbs of torque.

Are you planning a lot of heavy duty towing with that GLK?

For some of us, diesel-engined MBs are a way of life in our transportation needs. I began driving the 'diesel' exclusively in 1991. My folks started driving MB diesel cars in the 1960s when driving a diesel was anything but cool - but driving a Mercedes-Benz was way up there in cachet. For me, it made more dollars and cents versus especially the American-made cr#p, or other gashogs available that were also known for their dismal reliability and longevity.

As far as them (MB diesels) being a bargain leasing or buying new? The value just isn't there - unless perhaps you're going to drive it a bunch of miles, keeping it 10 to 20 years. Leasing never makes sense, FWIW. My last MB diesel bought 14 years ago new, was the first and last time I'll ever buy new. They're such a value/bargain buying used, that to me is the only way to go. Don't be afraid of a clean, one-owner MB diesel with 50K to 60K miles on it, several years old - if, you are looking for maximum value from one. Just my .02.

370 ft/lbs is impressive for a diesel, but average for a lot of V8's. My wife drove the 2013 Audi Q7 Diesel and the first thing she said was "why doesn't it have any power?"

Yes, I have owned and driven this 300SD for almost 28 years now. It has been a good car and will get consistent 28-30 mpg. I drove it during hard times, but it would have never been a voluntary choice.

On the other hand, my 1995 BMW 525i (which I only bought because it was cheap) gets the same 28 mpg and will smoke the tires easily from a roll, gets on the freeways easier and is a lot less effortless to drive.

My Supercharged 2001 Mustang knocked down 28 mpg from California to Florida with the A/C on.

My plan is to buy my wife a Q7 with the supercharged gasoline V6, which she absolutely loved...

No flame here, I just don't see a place for diesels with the modern electronics, IMHO anyways, but that is a nice looking car and they no longer sound like a corn harvester!!!

I agree! I love my diesel for what it is, a reliable beast that I can actually fix. As much as I love diesels I would never buy a modern one with all the electronics and the future repair builds. I would rather have a gas car, better mpg....faster....if I could get a newer diesel with out all the electronic gizmos and computers I would go diesel....but as to stands, I would rather a modern gasser over a diesel....

I guess i'm the opposite then. My next cars are going to be a W211 320 cdi (the last inline 6) and probably a first gen sprinter. Electronics don't scare me, DPFs do.

Modern diesels beat out the gassers easily in every department. When I was buying my TDI, vs the 5cyl (modern) gasser, the diesel won hands down. Tons of torque, 2x the mpg, plenty of power.

I will say the steeringwheel in my TDI is almost identical to that in the GLK.

Congrats to the OP on the new purchase! That is a very nice machine you have there. I am glad you are enjoying it.

The only downside, at least in my opinion, is that modern cars are much more difficult to work on. I doubt you will want to start tinkering with a vehicle that new and under warranty, though. Moot point, I guess.

To be fair, the VW 2.5L 5 banger is a steaming pile compared to just about every gasoline engine in production today.

Wow, I have driven all the newest diesels and I can tell you that your spectrum must be expanded.

You haven't driven some of the cars I am driving and I'm not even talking about exotics here....

I can tell you one in particular that will run circles around a diesel and get fantastic mileage and that is the BMW 328i. Those are quick little cars.
