Dark Brown W116 on 215 South Early Mornings (CA)

When back in the area between courses and driving to and from Big Bear, I often see this W116 on the 215 South and then onto the 210 Eastbound.

Wondering if it could be a forum member???

Passed him at 115 mph recently and blinked my hazards as I went by....

How can you keep on setting these speed records in a diesel, and not get any speeding tickets?

It's a lot about timing and knowing certain sections of roads well, including knowing when the Highway Patrol briefs and changes shifts. When I am traveling out of the area or out of state, I am on the road by 3:00am and no later than 4:00am in almost every case.

100-115 in So Cal isn't really speeding. I've had Mini's pass me at those speeds. The flow of traffic is always 80-90 mph.

They are not 'events' Joe, just opportunities where there is little or no traffic.

A pic of my W116 speedo is shown in my signature. I also have a couple of You Tube videos where you can see my speedo and tach at the same time.

When I had the stock 3.07:1 axle, 120 was flat out and as fast as the benz would run. Now, with the 2.47:1 axle, high speed interstate cruising is effortless. To answer your question directly, my rpm @ 115 mph is 3700...

Forum member 'Hammerwerfer' has ridden in this car, so if you have any questions as to how it runs, feel free to PM him and ask....

My last ticket for speed was in my 1969 Dodge Charger in 1983.

The last time I was even pulled over was on Interstate 90 between Wallace and Missoula, Montana last year.

I saw a trooper up ahead on the shoulder turn on his emergency lights and I let up on the throttle, rolling past him at about 120 mph.

When I stopped he asked me, "Do you know how fast you were going?"

I answered, "I'm guessing about 150 mph there for a while."

He replied, "My partner back up the road a ways clocked you on radar at 162 mph. That's 87 mph over the posted limit."

"Last time I was here there was no daytime speed limit."

He laughed and said, "You don't get out much, do you?"

I chuckled and said, "Well, I guess you better take me in. I was breaking the law and there's no excuse for that, even if Supercharged cars are a lot of fun."

"Supercharged? Can I see what's under the hood???"

The other trooper joined us and we ended up talking about hot rods and the like. They let me go with a warning and I bought them lunch at the denny's in Silver Bow.

I asked the trooper, "So, why you letting a good speed stop go?"

"Because you are the first person I have stopped all day that told the truth...."

You must be living right then...on my trip to CA lst year I got a $452 camera ticket for turning right on red and I thought I was going overboard being super careful driving?

Left there impressed at how healthy the population appears with so many choosing to ride bicycles. Wasn't till I got home and received the ticket in the mail a couple weeks later that I realized the bike riding wasn't for health reasons...they just couldn't afford to drive their cars any more.

I drive super careful. I was a pursuit driving instructor for many years and a former race driver, so I am very aware of my surroundings. However, when the conditions warrant, I have been known to turn up the wick.

My wife says I drive too slow, most of the time anyways...

A friend of ours from church, John, told us about the time he was pulled over in Illinois for speeding. The officer asked John for to give him one good reason to be speeding. John replied, "I have my wife here in the front seat and my mother-in-law in there in the back seat. The two of them are having an argument and I want to get her [mother-in-law] home before the two of them make up and she has to come home with us."

"I understand your situation perfectly. You can go."

In Michigan they can arrest you for exceeding 100mph....

I've touched high speeds before, as high as 140mph in my 420sel....but only for about half a mile on an abandoned stretch of freeway up north. I rarely go much over 80-85 in normal driving. Not worth the cost/risk. Around here they can technically nab you for 5 over with a $75 ticket...but rarely do, thankfully.
