Fellow Benzers in NC Beware!

Came across this article today at lunch. Was reading through the list and it appears all those SD's that popped up at LKQ lately had an origin!

This guy was apparently running a scam taking advantage of our ridiculously lax scrap laws here. He would ask if the car was for sale, leave, then call a tow truck, have it towed to LKQ or another local scrap yard, and sell them for scrap. Beeing over 10 years old he didn't need a title!

The collector they mentioned in the story had 5 80's benzes lifted and junked. It appears he got some back from the LKQ on Miami in DUrham, but they were missing parts.

I post this in case any regular customers of the Durham LKQ may have bought parts from these cars. May be able to help put things right for this poor guy...

Suddenly I want to re-enable the car alarm.

That's sad....we could have used parts from them Mercedes :P

I had some guy knock on my door a few weeks ago, wanting to know if I wanted to sell my car....I said no......now I am wondering if I should hide it around the block....

Take the wheels off and put it on blocks in the backyard

That scam has been operating in one form or another here in Canada for some time. My across-street neighbour narrowly missed having it happen to his minivan (luckily his son had stayed home sick that day).

In another variant, watchers scan neighbourhoods for people who leave expensive newer cars in their driveway while they take public transit to work (and where the house is unoccupied all day).

Once the owner had left their house, the scammers call a towing company and claim to be the owner and explain they were in a hurry to get to work, they had to take a cab as the car would not start, and forgot to leave a key behind. Would they please tow the car to such-and-such a garage?

The scammers would rent vacant bays around town for short periods of time and hang an auto shop sign outside. The "garage" would pay the tow driver cash and he would be on his way, none the wiser.

Took quite a while for the police to crack what was going on as the scammers moved neighbourhoods, tow companies and garages all the time. Actually now that I think about it, I believe it was an auto insurance investigator who worked it out first.

i wonder what the 5 Mercedes models were?

I believe in the article he commented about SD's. So I suspect they are 300SDs. I think it's in the PDF attachment in the stories listing what was stolen...

Another useless slacker who'll hopefully soon get shot .

Lawyer up and go after LKQ for possession of stolen property.

NC-Diesel 06-30-2013 12:49 AM

Me too! They almost know me by name which is suspect is an indication of an addiction...they have not had any W123's in a while. I see SD's up there all the time though.

Not if they followed state law in acquiring the car. Take a run at the people that committed an actual crime not those with $ in their pockets.

You buy a mower from a neighbor, get a bill of sale and later it turns out to be stolen, do you still want the legal owner to sue you?
