would it be better just to cut out parts of it out and weld some straight pipe in?

I straight piped mine, 300sdl, after about two weeks I put a straight thru muffler on it. No real increase in power slight increase in mpg but a BIG increase in noise.

I took mine to a muffler shop and had them bend a new pipe from the center back. Mine was rusted with holes and patches.
Good luck with it. There a some videos on YouTube that show benzes with straight pipes. Check them for sound.

On another Forum Forced Induction posted a pic of a cut away Muffler. It is simply an expansion chamber with Pipes going in and out of it.

If the Cali Car has the Trap Oxidizer it can be replaced with the so called Test Pipe.

I have a straight pipe on my 300SD....it gives slightly better off the line acceleration as the turbo spools a bit faster, but overall not much different in terms of economy/performance. It does sound good however.

I straight piped my car, there was definitely a big increase in power for me, across the entire rpm range. I just cut out the mufflers and welded some straight sections in. Straight piping reduces back pressure caused by the mufflers, which allows the turbo to spool more quickly, making boost at lower rpm's, and therefore more power at lower rpm's.

I also have my ALDA maxxed out, and boost adjusted up to 12lbs

I just put a straight pipe on my 300sd. I just had a muffler shop cut the muffler off and put a pipe in its place. Its not much louder and I really haven't noticed an increase in power or mpg yet because I have not had it long. I noticed that when the old muffler fell and hit the ground tons of soot came out. I did also notice that it seems since my turbo spools up a little faster I see less smoke.

I straight piped and found that the turbo spooled up quickly and that the car sounded a bit sportier. More like a v8.

If the exhaust you removed was the original then there would not be any performance increase as the stock system has virtually no back pressure.

cut the muffler off this weekend to find that the flow was being restricted by carbon build up. Straight piped it and am really enjoying the improvement.
