I bought it for a friend, it's his first Diesel, and first MB so you guys will be seeing him on the forum soon enough, the car has brand new Bridgestone tires on it and the bunt wheels look like they've been refinished or just very well taken care of because they are in near perfect condition.

I'm not 100% sure but non turbo Euro 300D from '83 might have a 722.4 transmission - possibly a 722.405

In which case there's vacuum and throttle adjustment much like the 722.315 on the turbo variant.

Yep you are right, N/A tails, but I have a full Euro 230E including tails and Cloth interior sitting around, I might do some swapping, probably not the interior though, Light cream cloth with silver paint wouldn't look good IMO,
A couple more euro options it didnt come with are the City/Hwy horns, headlamp wipers or a rear sun shade, still A pretty decent find for the money., It is a A/C car but not working yet, I'm Happy with the purchase, it has no problem getting right up to 80 or 85 and cruising, The no rust thing really sold me though, like literally, Not one bit of rust I could find anywhere I checked and Ive had enough of these to know the problem areas, doesnt really smoke hardly either. All the paperwork says it came over from Deutschland about 7 years ago, went to Cali till about 4 years ago when it came to Oregon, and should continue to live a nice long life here.

Im probably going to take it down to the Local Indy shop this week and get the low down on it. I have messed with the bowden on a diesel W124 trans, but not a w123 before, it its definitely different.

I wouldn't take it to the indy before you get the vacuum issue sorted because otherwise you'll be paying the indy to chase down a vacuum problems which is easily done with a MityVac.
If you don't have a MityVac, plugging the green and yellow lines leaving the engine compartment (plug the engine side) will take the climate control and door locks out of the vacuum system. If the engine shuts off and the car shifts smoothly, then you'll know the leak is either in the climate control or the locks. Also put a piece of vacuum line on the shut off valve and give 3 hard such on the line with the engine running. If the engine shuts off, you know the shut off valve is ok. If you get a mouthful of oil, you'll know the shut off valve diaphragm has a hole.

I will most definitely do the small list of things you mentioned before I take it into the shop, Thank you very much!!!
The vac locks are inop at the moment anyway.
So if I am hearing this right,,,,The locks, trans, heater control, and Eng. shut off valve all operate off the same vac system? Once again, this is a Euro car with the Dual zone climate control twist and slider knobs,

One more question, If the shut off valve diaphram does have a hole, will that cause loss of vac. to all of the above mentioned accesories?
Once again,
Thanks for all your help Forum members!!!!!
I am inclined to fix the problems myself with your help if possible.
I would rather spend the $50 or so on a Mighty Vac and work out the issues then spending $50-100 at a shop just to hear what the problem is.

All use the same vacuum system. Bad shut off diaphragm won't typically effect the rest of the system when engine is running since it's not drawing vacuum at that point. It will draw down vacuum with the key in the off position if it is holed.

I also noticed while driving it last night that none of the dash lights work save for the gear shift lights, do they all run off of the same fuse? I had to replace the guage cluster dimmer switch in my w124 when i got that but i cant remember if that fixed all the dash lighting or just the guage cluster. Tonight i will also go through the fuse box and clean all the contacts and fuse ends and in the near future replace with brass tip fuses.

Oh yeah, also the dome light is inop. but the switch for that seems to be worn out, the roller knob has no resistance when rolled back and fourth

Yes the rheostat behind the gauge cluster is bad. It controls all the dash lights. You can simply bridge the 2 contacts with a wire and solder or spend like 60$ for a new one.
