I sorted through all the threads and have determined that given the miles on the trans (about 275K), and wanting to get at least another 4 (mostly) trouble free years out of the car, I'm going to go with a fresh rebuilt unit. Sun Valley's generally very good reputation, price and warranty made my decision for me. Also spent some time on the phone with their salesman Marc who is a really knowledgeable MBZ guy...and a nice guy to boot. I'm also going to throw a new radiator and vacuum pump at the car for reliability sake as well. The car has been a great and nearly trouble free ride for me for the last six+ years, so I figure she's due for some attention!

I'll provide an update once the new trans in in and I've put some miles on it.

Transmission update...

I ended up buying the replacement trans from Sun Valley and had it installed a couple weeks ago- now with probably a few hundred miles on it to date. Happy to report it runs better than it ever has right out of the box! I recommend SV with high marks for their rebuild quality and customer service. Between the cost of the trans, new vac pump, water pump, radiator, serpentine belt and tensioner plus installation of everything, total cost was just shy of $3k. Money well spent in my opinion!
