So, what's the going rate on a 240d engine and trans?

I looked in the for sale section, but $1000 seems kind of high. What are they selling at?

Would it solve your problem, and how much is that worth? Depends a lot on the motor & tranny. Known good condition & head count for a lot. Late head ~+10 HP.

Get an LTL shipping quote on a palleted engine and then tell me how much more an engine in a half a day's drive is worth.

As for the tranny, Auto << 4 sp < 5 sp.

With sale of pair, compared to engine only sale, you can be more confident the flywheel or flex plate is original and should balance to the engine, a plus. Engine w/ no FW/FP = roll of dice on balance.

I paid, IDK, $380 or $400 for a late 616, no FW, I was semi-confident that I would not get hosed on it (didn't get hosed, thanks guy), and a 240D rear clip & deck lid. Drove there and back in a day, w/ engine in trunk, clip jammed into back & passenger seats, new deck lid sticking up into the air. Thought I did well.

OMG, I think I went straight to day care too. Little one tucked in right next to the clip.

$2-500, 616 engine only is typical range. $1.5k for the occasional crated engine or recent rebuild.

Replaced a good runner that used oil a quart of oil a week.

Basically, I have a good 1982 240d with a 4 speed manual. Doesn't leak oil, burns some, good clutch, etc. The body of the car is worthless as a whole.

I'm wanting a new daily driver, and figured the engine and trans would be worth more by themselves than within the bad body.

The car is currently in driving condition, so any prospective buyer could hear the engine run, put it through all the gears, make a highway run at 85 mph, etc.

I'm just wondering if $1000 is truly the going rate for used engines like this, or if that's the "let the engine sit until someone is willing to give me top dollar" kind of price. You know what I mean?

I paid $650 for a good running '84 240 4 speed. I couldn't drive it much as the clutch slave was kaput but with the engine off I could run it smoothly thru all gears and the owner (he runs a German repair shop in Raleigh) assured me it was a good one - he had driven the car when all was well. I drove it on and off the trailer by starting it and shutting it off quickly and all seemed fine. I just wanted the trans for the S-10 project and sold the engine and my old auto trans to a friend.

I don't think I paid bottom dollar but not too much, either. The body was fair on the car but no one wanted it.

Hope that helps.

Dan

Something between $500 for a complete but unknown condition engine and trans and $1k for one still in the car sounds fair to me. With missing parts maybe a couple hundred less.

If your asking for anything over 500$....I would want to know the compression numbers....you can buy some nice runners for 1k...meaning whole cars....

I believe mine is listed in the for sale section at 400$ ? IIRC. the one pulled by Dan ^^ and I for a truck re-power. 240d Motor 300sd trans pairing.

I am here in NC, I think it is a fair # especially one that is already pulled and could conceivably be loaded into a waiting pickup if purchased.

but then again it has been for sale for a few weeks with no takers so maybe even 400 for the pair is too much. IDK

Proximity can count for a lot. Still, at $1k, it's an known runner, no big headaches. This adds value, but I think you'll sit on it for a while at that price. If you're married, a clock has already started.

Buying a used engine is a roll of the dice like buying a used car.
Most people are skeptical of buying a engine with 2 - 300,00K on it, but on the forum here, we think nothing of buying a used MB car with 300K on it.

It isn`t always possible to check the health of a used engine, IE pulling one at a PNP yard. they don`t let you start them.

A Diesel Engine Long Block is $229.99 and a core of $49.99

A Diesel Engine w/accessories $249,99 and a core of $49.99

Accessories doesn`t include all the accessories. for ea item not on their check list, they charge for it, but 1/2 the reg price.

I pulled an engine a couple months back from a 80 300SD that was rear ended hard. shoved the rear bumper on the left side almost to the rear window. the drivers door would not close.

This eng/trans had just been rebuilt. new vac pump, starter, R-4 compressor, IP, Injectors, new air filter element that had the milage written on it, the guy only went 1100 miles before the accident.

I bought the whole engine will every accessory. $468.00 out the door. so you can see the difference from the above list.

I have been watching a CL listing in Portland Or. for a couple months. the guy is asking too much, or maybe too much for that area.

123 Factory Replacement Mercedes 240D Engine-In Car-Hear Run-Guarant'd - $1200 (Hillsboro/Gaston)

I am parting out this crashed 1982 240D, 123 bodied car. Engine is an obvious factory replacement with low miles--it has the factory tag on front of valve cover, stamp pad on block is fresh with no engine number, and engine is reasonably clean on the outside. Removing the oil filler cap you can see it is all new and spick and span inside with an obvious new factory cam (it has the red ring on it). Starts easy with no blow-by. I know some history, and it does not burn oil. Engine was not overheated--it was shut off immediately after accident. Engine is still in car, so you can hear it run. When cold it starts rite up on first try and sounds great. And I guarantee it!

Engine will fit all 123 bodied cars, from 1975 on. It will also fit the earlier 115 bodied cars by using most all your 115 engine attachments.
Price for engine with all attachments, including good standard 4-spd transmission is $1500. If you want engine and attachments only, $1400. If you do not need any attachments, $1200.

I also have thousands of other parts for Mercedes models from 1960 to early 1980's, and I repair them, too.
All parts I sell, including electrical items, are guaranteed to complete customer satisfaction or your money back.
You can email me, tho I prefer the telephone (sorry, texting does not work on my fone).

There was a 82 240D not too far from me that the guy said the frame was bent. 80K miles, clean etc.... and wanted $1000. that is a better deal than the above one.

In April I saw a Nissan SD-22 Diesel eng and 5-spd trans (on the Portland CL) out of a 82 Datsun PU that was wrecked, less that 110K on it for $550. I called the guy, and sent him (Paypal) the money.
we were up there the first of May and picked up the Trans in the 240D and brought it home.
This next weekend Iam going back in my 82 Datsun PU to bring the engine home. this is a 750+ mile trip one way. Crazy? yeah maybe, but Iam bringing my Wife home too. she has been there a month helping the daughter, and we had a new Grandson this morning @ 1:20am. 8lb 15oz.

So I`ll find out if this is a good one. or some more Yard Art.
These Nissan engines are not too plentiful.

I would say to start at $600 or so. The OM616 simply is not as powerful as the OM617, unfortunately. You might also try selling the engine and transmission separately.

The 240D hits 85?

That sounds like pricing for the OM617.95X motors. The 240D engines don't go for a much, although I'll grant you that the 4-speed is a plus.

Three years ago after I did the manual conversion on my 300D, I sold the rusted out 240D (with relatively bad interior) with the engine still in it, and the functional but leaking 300D auto trans in the trunk for $200. I needed it gone fast, and it was.
