Anybody Have a 190E 2.6????

Knowing this is primarily a diesel forum, but also knowing MBZ guys usually have several different models, I wanted to ask this question. Just curious about real-world mileage numbers. Thanks...Robert

High teens to mid 20s for the automatic, 30% more for the manual. Its not particularly efficient. CIS/KEjet or whatever you want to call it sucks gas. The 2.3 is just as inefficient.

When my 190 was a 2.3 it got about 18-19 city and 23-24 hwy. With the 2.2 diesel I swapped in I am getting 28-30 city and 35-37 highway.....and about 1/3 of the acceleration.

I always liked the W201 and the 2.6 for its snappy performance. Looking to put my son into one of them....

My 190E 2.6 with a 3.0L can do 24mpg on the turnpike doing 70 mph with cruise.

In city I think I was getting 20? Not remembering 100%

My 190e has the cossie ,dont think its going to be a winner in the mpg catagory ,even has a fuel econo gauge thats a bit hiliaroius ,when you mash the peddle the needle goes down.Looking back I would have to say that their are some grimelins lurking with these 190e gas cars ,my advise is to ask what ,if any ,new parts were installed ,fuel distributor ,fuel accummilator ,pump ,filter ,etc, etc. The following can cost some serious cash. Ive been doing some fuel system repairs for the last 2 months on this seroiusly neglected car of mine , but glad to say the maiden voyage is set for monday .Fuel tank, fuel distributer ,injectors, plugs ,wires, pump, filter,so far $700 in parts . plus $1000 for the car and Im still smiling.

Ever since they started with the STAR smog check BS at the beginning of 2013, I wouldn't touch a Kjet car with a 10 foot pole. That test is designed for fail non EFI cars.

18 to 21 mpg mixed (more on highway) driving so far, after valve job and fuel pumps replaced.

Prior to this, it yielded 15 to 16 mpg. Got 20 mpg on a road trip back then.

I have not run the car on a full highway run at sustained speeds yet because I primarily use it for commuting to work (rush hour traffic). Since it's a 4-mpg difference based on the numbers between city and highway driving, I would hope it could achieve at least 23 mpg on the highway.

I have no fear whatsoever of smog checks....That's always been my area of expertise.

Look at this CA smog report on my wife's old 1985 355 CID Suburban with a Q-Jet and one of my custom-designed cams ground by Ultradyne and 10.00:1 compression.

Compare these numbers to an EFI car and they will rival it.

It's all about making things right and attention to detail...it can be done. A K-Jetronic is 1,000 times easier than a carburetor to pass smog...

Thumbs up We bought a 190E 2.6 brand new in 1990...

and drove it all over California for nearly 10 years. It was one of the rare 5 speed manuals. I was zippy, had a silky engine, handled nicely, and sounded fantastic. We fell in love with it at first. Soon after we bought it, I saw that it was burning about a quart of engine oil every 1500 miles or so. We took it in for repeated tests at the dealer in Capitola and they replaced the valves seals and ran a sealed engine test on it - but never fixed the problem... I got used to checking the oil. Fuel mileage averaged in the mid 20s.

We drove to about 195,000 miles, and took it with us when we moved to New Mexico. The air conditioning was not up to the high desert heat, the driver's side rear spring collapsed, and the car finally broke down and stranded my wife at Laguna pueblo on a trip to Ca. I don't recall what caused the breakdown, but it did lose power over the course of 190,000 miles, and eventually became unreliable. I sold it to the head chef at Route 66 casino for $2,400.00 in 2003.

Overall, it was the most we ever paid for a car, and I think we expected more from a baby benz than we got. The '84 300D is an entirely different beast from an engineering perspective, and more deserving of the Mercedes imprimatur IMHO - cheaper in cash, but way more expensive in time. Wish I still had that 5 speed, though

For those who can't read the numbers....

C02 = 14.50% HC @ 15 mph = 29 HC @ 25 mph = 23

CO @ 15 mph = 0.17 CO @ 25 mph = 0.15

Nox @ 15 mph 0009 NOX @ 25 mph = 0008

And this is with a 4 barrel Q-Jet.

Yes, my custom camshaft profile, reworked 58cc combustion chambers and 10.00:1 compression all contributed to these numbers, but I can make anything pass smog if the engine is mechanically sound.

Most shops have no clue...

Try this smog report on for size; 2000 Ford F150 with a 4.6 litre V8 with both camshafts advanced a full 10° and a little PCM tweaking.

These engines are 'High Emitter Profile' vehicles and it doesn't take much to bring them down to a very clean level with greatly improved power output....

My 2.6 is a five speed, and on several runs from CT to Syracuse NY ( rt 9 to 91, then 90 west) the car was doing 23 to 27 mpg. Lower mpg related directly to increased travel speed. The best mileage was with cruise on 65 loafing home.

That's not bad mileage. I've been ending up with quite a few cars of late, but thus far, all BMW's...
