Removing ARV from turbo

I currently have the turbo from my 1985 300D KaliKar apart on the bench. I was wondering if there was any advantage to removing/blocking the ARV while I'm in there?

What exactly is the ARV for? How is it supposed to function? I have the vacuum line to it removed; is that good enough or should I remove the entire mechanism and make a block-off plate for the hole?

When I took it apart I found a spring pressing on a diaphragm that appears to be controlled by the vacuum connection. It all appears to be connected to the wastegate.

Thanks for any help/info.

Thanks, that was good info. Mine is just disconnected too.

So now that I have it apart, I was wondering if it could fail somehow...What if:
  • The spring weakened. I don't think this is an issue; the spring is fairly strong and only operates against fairly low pressure.
  • The diaphragm fails. Its a rubber and rubberized fabric combination. Since its purpose is to provide a large surface area for the vacuum to operate on, and there is no longer any vacuum provided, I don't think this would be an issue.
  • I haven't removed the diaphragm for fear of damaging it, but I assume it is also used to seal-off the passage going to the intake manifold (pressurized air). Now if this seal is damaged due to decaying rubber, there could be a problem. Does anyone know what's present under the diaphragm and could a deteriorated diaphragm be a problem?

I've attached some photos:
  1. The compressor housing and the location of the ARV.
  2. An exploded photo of the ARV (as far as I am willing to "explode" it)
  3. The ARV with the internal components in assembled position.

I pressed a freeze plug into the hole the piston covers then put everything back together. I would have capped the port into the turbo inlet as well but it was an odd shape.
