Exclamation FRIEGHTENING clanging noise. 1980 300sd w116

I've had the SD for several years now. Drove it Az and back no problems year before last. Weekly i proly average well 500 miles driving. For the first time ever I'm afraid to drive the beast anywhere. Sunday on our way home from church coming up from one of the tunnels I noticed a slight loss of power. figured maybe it was time for a fuel filter. Well once we got into of the high way and stopped at a light I heard a slight sound so I turned off the music and there was this tapping. like a ball pean hammer on a block of metal. I took it real easy the rest of the way home. check my oil. it was normal. here's a link to a youtube video so you can hear it.

I live in the middle of nowheres so I gotta have my car. let me know what you think. thanks in advance.

Judging by the oil leaking from the valve cover, I want to guess this hasn't seen a valve adjustment for some time?

I see a lot of of things that should be fixed on that engine but we are just taking the noise right now. I want to say that it is injector nailing as the sound doesn't increase when throttled....I would start by loosing each hard linen at the injectors, one at a time while running and find out if the noise stops or is still there. If it stops, I would suggest next thing to do is swap injectors and see if it follows. If it does, I would suggest getting new injectors.

Noises in the Night

LOL
"I see a lot of of things that should be fixed on that engine........"

I had to smile. You don't see the 4th of it. I cleaned it and painted it white to see where the leaks really where, there's oil coming from places I didn't think it was possible to have oil come from.

BUtttt now days the choices are limited to food and short term fixes to keep the beast going till the income starts flowing again.

Valve adjust I'm thinking about 8 months ago, the motor is not original to the car.

I thought injectors too, Actually started to go there before I posted the video.

so just in case it's not that what else could it be?

Unhappy Next

So I loosened all injector lines one at a time. Injector 3 caused the sound to deepen but not go away. I replaced it any how. no change.

see video here

not liking the sound of this.

whats the next step?

drop the oil pan(s)? gee i get to fix a leak oh joy.

I think I'll go do my home work eat some ice-cream have acid reflux and go to sleep.

get up early with the dew and see what i can do.

thanks.

Sounds like a spun bearing. If it is, the engine is toast.
Sorry. I hope I am wrong. I had one and got a transplant engine.

Personally, it sounds more like valvetrain noise to me. I would pull the valve cover and pay closest attention to clearances/condition of #3 parts before I would dig into the bottom end.

8 months = 34 Weeks

34 * 500 = 17,000

Valve adjustment interval? Every 12,000.

That would be choice number one for me, anyway. If you want a valve cover gasket, I can mail you a new one in a day or two for $5 + $2 shipping.

I had the same thing happen on my 300CD a few years ago. The problem was in fact a spun bearing. I replaced the engine with a good used one (pulled it from a $500 drivable car). As soon as I started it in the CD, it had the same sound as the old engine. I was not too happy. I read up on injector nailing, and found out that it was in fact nailing this time. The difference is that an engine with a rod knock will still run smooth, but a nailing injector will sound the same, but cause a rough running condition. Also you can smell the oil. If it smells burnt, you have a bad bearing.

Gotta finish scrapping the donor for this motor, then Jooseppi, I'll do the valve adjust. When I did it last the motor was in another car which soon after got wrecked. He gave me the car after that and it sat for a bit, but yea it's due. this is actually the second time I've heard this sound. the first I could get no clear cut answers and a free engine fixed my problem. Now the replacement is doing the same and I really really want to know what root cause is so I can find a way to prevent it. See I have a rebuilt short block (also given to me) that I can finish and put in (if I can get some cash) and problem solved. But till then I need to get to school and "work" when i get it. If it's a knock that's not going to come out the top at 60mph then I'll drive it till the summers end. I get the feeling the only way to find out is to pull it apart.

RollGuy I will sniff the oil and let you know.

it does run smooth, but not as strong and now is harder to start.

Getting out side before it gets to late, will update this evening.

listen to- when he revs the engine.. sounds increases with rpm to a point then seems to go away... when he lets go..rpms drop but the sound drops back imediately to the way it sounded at idle = injector IMO

I'm with LoosBenz. It doesn't sound like the fuel knock that a bad injector would cause, nor does it sound like a bearing problem. Look for a very loose valve, or possibly a broken valve spring.

Got a stethascope? Or a long shaft screwdriver that you can put to your ear?

Try listening around to ascertain exactly where the noise is coming from.

I had a very similar noise in my w116 SD, which scared me half to death. Two mechanics listened and pronounced a spun bearing.

A third, my buddy who owns a shop, was so drunk he was barely able to stand. He stuck his head under the hood, moved his ear around, then pointed to the alternator.

The shaft had broken inside and was producing the loud knocking.

(The timing chain snapped two years later anyway, but at least I survived that scare.)

YMMV. But good luck with it.

Noises

Thunderstorms kept me from pulling the valve cover as planned last night. I hope to get it tonight if it doesn't storm again.

Thanks for the input.

Clang Clang cLANG

Got valve adjustment done.

nothing unusual, no deformed lobes or obvious wear marks, no gaps.

no slack or play in any parts up top.

everything was typically tight. started up and no change. clang clang clang.

going to borrow a stethoscope Sunday. Pulling oil pan in am to look for bits and pieces.
