OM617 front cylinder crankcase cover installation warning

Hello:

I recently pulled, resealed and reinstalled the front cylinder crankcase cover as part of replacing my front crank seal. The job was a bit of a nightmare because of misinformation or misunderstanding of the proper torque settings for the six bolts that hold this piece to the crankcase.

In section 01-215 of the FSM, it walks you through pulling and reinstalling this piece. It lists two torques, one for the crankshaft bolt (330NM!) and the other for some M8 screws. I assumed, and others here have stated that the 35NM for the M8 screws is what should be used to tighten the bolts of the upper crankcase cover. This is not the case.

The bolts for the crankcase cover are M6, and are really just longer versions of the screws used to secure the lower oil pan. I snapped two of the original bolts and then two brand new bolts trying to get them to the 35NM torque.

After a panicked email to whunter, and his kindness in calling me, I was able to get the correct torque spec, which is 10NM, same as the bolts holding on the oil pan.

Hopefully my saga will same someone else some grief.

The M8 bolts are of the vibration damper.
