Question w124 engine in a w201 chassis

Dear members of the forum,

I've got a question about a(n) MB motor swap.

This is the situation:

2 cars are in my possession:

1 w201 2000cc diesel (190d) '92
1 w124 3000cc turbodiesel (300d turbo) '93

the latter had an accident last weekend, the rear part of the body has been damaged beyond repair but the engine is still in mint condition .

Knowing the sluggishness of the 2000cc 4 cyl diesel of the w201, I'd like to swap the engines (and transmission, etc etc) of these cars. The only problem is, I don't know if the significantly bigger engine would fit in the engine compartment of the w201.

Can anyone tell me?
If it is possible, are there any things to take under consideration like changing or relocating some items in the compartment etc.. and will I be able to use my w201 radiator or do I have to use the w124 one, will the radiator fit? I think I will need the w124 radiator because of the imbedded oilcooler..

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure if it's the same diesel engine. However, the 190E was offered in the 190E 2.5 Turbo trim. Looking at the engines alone, they look similar.

I didn't know that they sold the 300D 3.0L I-6 Turbodiesel in '93

It's not the same engine, ofcourse not That's why I'm going to swap them...

the 190's engine is a 4cyl. 2000cc diesel and the 124 is a 6cyl 3000 cc turbodiesel; but if you mean the "look", yes, the engine looks almost identical, apart from the turbo, intake manifold placement and placement of the airfilter and ofcourse, the 2 extra cylinders.

Yes they did, they sold the 300d turbo 6cyl. diesel in '93.. Why wouldn't they have? Mind my location: Belgium, that's in Europe, in the center between Great Brittain, The Netherlands, Germany, Luxemburg and France; introduction dates or expiry dates of available engines may differ between the US and EU.

Greets,

BB

ooh woops my bad...
I didn't see where you are located.

What I was refering to was the US version of the 300D 2.5T compared to the 190E 2.5T's engine...

I'm not sure how much bigger the I-6 3.0L Turbodiesel is compared to the M103 2.6L six in the 190E 2.6
I'm pretty sure that after some mods you can do it. Well good luck.!
It'd be really cool..
190D 3.0 Turbo..

The engine will PROBABLY fit if you convert to a 190E 2.6 front end - more trouble than it is worth, probably as there are considerable modifications required to stuff the 2.6L six in there. I suspect the diesel is larger, and may not fit at all.

So sorry to hear of the demise of such a nice car .

Hello again

yes, it was me , it was me who posted on the newsgroup, I did get some replies but they were unsatisfactory, especially one one-word reply being "yes". I assume, by browsing this forum, there are a lot of experienced mercedes users/customers/drivers around here, maybe even one who tried what I dream of ....

Yes, last sundaymorning was a very, very sad day which will stay in my memory untill the day I die.. That car was my fathers, I "inherited" it after the crash, it was loved by me, my father, my girlfriend, my friends, by todays' standards, it isn't that fast anymore but the year we bought it (1993) it surely was one rare rocket on our highways ...

Therefore, I would like to keep the "legacy" going by reïncarnating the 300 in the 190...

My father has owned several nice cars, this was his third mercedes but this one was the one which opened jaws... the power, the smoothness, this is not a car, this is a mercedes!

Anyways, the 300 will soon be replaced with a full (action) packed 1999 E-class 270cdi... smooth car as well but hey, it will NEVER be the perfect replacement for a 300d turbo....

You will always miss a mercedes when sold but you will certainly remind a crashed one in your prayers, at least, I will, not that I am a catholic person, but you know what I mean..

If anyone is interested, I can post (or put online) some pictures before and after and even some movie clips of the car in action, although I will have to search my dv tapes for interesting scenes

Oh and euh, thanks for making me feel welcome to this forum.

Even if the swap would not work, I will still drive my 190 and a mercedes feeling will never fade, it can come to its right in the adequate company, I mean, in company of you guys.

Thanks for the support, and please, if anyone knows any tips or hints to make this "dreamswap" come through, you know where the reply-button is...

Thanks

greetings

BB

Since you have access to both cars, measure the OM603 in the 300D from the transmission plane forward then measure the same distance from the transmission plane of the 190D forward. That should give you an indication of what you're up against.

Bill suggested that you can gain some clearance by removing the fan of the OM603. Measure it with and without the fan to see if that's enough of a difference.
