How much would you say my SDL is worth?

I'm looking to sell my 87 SDL as soon as I can. I would like to know the correct price I should ask for this car... And what it's worth.

It has 271,000 miles, but has a whole lot of new parts. Brand new injection pump installed a year ago at this time (only 6-7K miles since then), tranny was replaced just over 50,000 miles ago as was the turbo. The head had all the valves re-done and re-seated just after the new IP was installed. The paint is in good shape. New rear springs and shocks, rebuilt Monark Injectors, glow plugs replaced two years ago, new expansion tank, new blower motor, new ignition switch, new pushbutton unit, new driver side seat controller, new condenser, new receiver dryer, new Klima relay, cooling system was citric acid flushed a few months back, the EGR has been deleted and many more things I can't think of off the top of my head.

The car drives great, has plenty of power and doesn't smoke unless you get on it in which case it lets a little black smoke out the back. I've recently driven it on two 10 hour road trips and it drove like a dream. No problems to speak of. The engine bay is incredibly clean, the interior is very clean as well. The center console wood has some cracks in it. I'm trying to sell this car because I need something that is a little more economical and that is better around town since my commute is strictly around town now. This car has been in our family since 2001 and we are the second owners. My dad drove this car for the majority of it's life until he gave it to me about four years ago. We both absolutely love Merc diesels, and it's sad for me to see it go, but that's life.

I can post some pictures if it would help you guys evaluate it. Thank you!

To price it the condition of the body is needed.

I will post pictures tomorrow. But the condition of the body is good. No rust, the paint is good, body is straight.

Keep it. Unless you go to motorcycle commuting (fun but has drawbacks) you aren't going to get your butt from where it is to where it needs to be much cheaper, or in as much comfort.

If you absolutely insist on selling it, expect to get 3-5 thousand dollars. Ask six, but don't expect to get it.

With that amount of mileage, it's not worth what you might think.

You'll face big headwinds trying to convince an uninformed buyer that there is significant life left in the car.
On the other hand, the relatively small percentage of people that are attracted to a car like this, generally are not willing to spend much money.

Original head or later casting? Service records available?

List it at $6000 and hunker down for a 3 month wait for the right buyer. Talk to Tyler860(?) and shertex for advice on creating the listing. I think you'll be lucky to get $2500 for it in a quick sale.

This is accurate.

All of the new parts increase the price by a tiny fraction of their cost. About $6K of parts was put into it and those parts will be lucky to bring another $1K at the sale.

The lower end of the engine still has almost 300K on it and nobody but a fool would expect it to go beyond 400K without serious attention. This will limit the sales price.

My guess is that it will sell for somewhere between $3K and $4K to the right buyer. Finding the right buyer might take some time.

I would consider it myself at that price if I didn't already have three M/B.

It is the original #14 head. I have service records for the IP, head work, all of the recent AC work and few others. Most of the other work was done by me. I just got an email from Shertex so I will be asking advice for the best way to list it.

@ Brian Carlton
It is unfortunate that after all the money that has been put into it, that it won't benefit me all too much, unless I do decide to keep the car. Well if something opens up with your car situation, let me know.

Like I said before, keep it. The market value is not that high, and you aren't going to be able to take the money you get from your SDL and get anything substantially better for the use you've described.
