Shock Mount? Time for a new one? Shock Mount? Time for a new one?

Didn't get much action over in the tech forum. I forgot Diesel Discussion was much more popular and active.. anyway..

My 190e's shock mount failed a while ago. This is from my 300D. What do you guys think? The other mount is fine, no cracks in the surface.

Yes, time to replace. Mine ('95 E300) were about as bad, maybe a little worse. Be careful purchasing replacements, mine turned out to have been made in China. So far (couple of months) they are OK but . . .

Consider replacing the struts and the buffers while you're in there; I thought mine were OK but in fact (200,000 miles) they were pretty worn out. You have to drop the struts to change the upper mounts anyway.

Hrmm.

The struts are from 09 (220,000) and don't have 50,000 miles on them yet.

I could get Febi/Bilstein or a "HD" meyle unit.. for about 30-35 each. Or Boge for $42

I could get the actual Mercedes unit for about $50 each..

Any thoughts?

Its been a while since I've done these. I did them a year ago on my 190e.. If I take the strut out, will that screw up my alignment? I can't remember now.

Im not quite sure whats HD about it. I'm leaning towards MB parts. I needed a good excuse to order dealer items anyway. Need to buy some a few plastic bits for the 420..

Meyle China

Mine were Meyle. It said "Meyle Germany" on the box but the plastic bag that contained the mount had a little paper sticker that said "China." See the picture. The mount has "Meyle" molded into the rubber; it's likely the molds and everything needed to make the part was simply sent to China and set up in a factory somewhere.

Meyle Germany => Meyle China!

Interestingly, the rubber on top was painted black (it flaked off after awhile). Reminded me of Japanese motorcycles in the '60s and '70s. So far the mounts are doing well but it's only been since earlier this year.

But like are the parts actually better? or more robust? or is it just marketing? I would think if Meyle were to offer a HD variant and a standard variant.

More robust backed by a 4 Year warranty. Wouldnt it be nice if all manufacturers listed real specs other than size and weight? They offer both HD and standards. MB is only 1 year warranty. I will only buy meyle hd from now on. They have subframe mounts and rear diff mounts. I just bought a set of the diff mounts. I hope they come out with HD flex disks and trans mounts. They have HD engine mounts as well.

Hmmmm. I know people who have used other Meyle HD engine mounts only to have them collapse in less than a year I think.

I think I bought a Meyle HD air cleaner bracket for my one 617 and it snapped in the middle. Lasted a year or so, maybe two.

Why do you plan on only buying Meyle HD? Due to the lengthy warranty?

The best are the OE MB mounts, second to them are the corteco/boge mounts. The HD meyle are a slightly different design.

As the OE mounts lasted 2 decades, I would think they are the most robust.

The best are the after market tuning adjustable ones.

I am one of those that had their 'HD motor mount' collapse in well under a year on my 300SEL with its frame twisting 188lbft of torque. And well under, I mean in a few days short of a week. HD crap.

My V90 also had quite a few HD Meyle bits on it when I redid the front end four or five years ago... sway links are junk now due to boots ripping as are the ball joint boots and I have a groaning strut bearing. Great. This is not just on that Volvo, my E23 BMWs also all have cracked boots on the Meyle stuff.

Stick with OEM, Sachs/Boge, or Lemforder if available. Anything else and you will be doing the work again shortly.
