98 and 1999 E Class diesels

Are they as tuff, and high milers, like the old 616s,and 617s? Thinking of trading my 99 for one. I miss the purr of a diesel. Can you make them any faster than stock?

The turbo charged, intercooled 98 and 99 E300 are healthy performers in stock condition in my opinion. I've got a customer with one that is at around 280k miles and it is a solid performer that has just required routine maintenance stuff over the years. There are more electronics involved but that goes with any of them after about 95.

The 98 and 99 have the OM606 same family as the last generation 124s. In the 124 and the 96/97 210s it is N/A. They added the turbo for 98 and 99.

The 210 606 still has a mechanical injection pump but the computer gets between your foot and the rack.

Due to all the computer controls not sure how much tuning you can do.

However it has plenty of punch (for a Diesel) when properly sorted due to the turbo.

I owned a '99 E300TD 14-years bought new. Not leased like some do. LOL! Only put 131K on it. My Brother now owns the car. Fine automobile. I'd never own a Mercedes-Benz that wasn't diesel-powered - nor would I ever lease any car.

My '98 is comfortable, drives quiet and is fairly well built. Not the same build quality is previous models but it holds it's own. The engine is modified with 7.5mm pump elements (stock is 6mm) so it'll really go. 0-60 is in the mid 7's now.

I'm currently on the road and it's returning mileage in the mid 30's.

Two major issues to look for are the front spring perches, and the glow plug issue. Front spring perches can fail due to corrosion that is not evident to the naked eye. As for the glow plugs, they are usually a royal pain to get out without breaking them, which can require major head work to get them out. Some dishonest sellers leave the broken glow plug in the head, and attach the wire from that plug to a second dummy plug grounded to the block so as not to throw a code.

If the electronics on your W140 didn't scare you away then the W210 shouldn't either.

The OM606.962 ECU can be re-flashed. Lots of tuners around. Typically advertise 10-20% HP gains for ~$2-300.

I think I paid $800 for new elements and installed them myself. But I also had to build a machine to calibrate the pump after I did the install which took like two years of spare time.

A shop probably would have charged about $400 to install them and do a basic calibration. That's just a guess though.

After you have the elements, power is only limited by your air and the engine internals.

I had a couple of different chips from different tuners for my 1999 diesel. The gains didn't look massive on paper, but the enhancement was quite obivous when driving

As the others have mentioned, the stock output is respectable without any alterations ...

One other thing I will add, and this is true for any Diesel engine.

Whenever you do locate one, put on your short list to change all 6 fuel hoses and the pre-filter and o-ring. After 15+ years the rubber gets brittle and begins to develop pin hole leaks. Not enough to show fuel leaking on the ground but sure enough air gets in.

The stock hoses are translucent milky white. If they are brown or yellow that means they have aged.

I changed all my hoses and still had air bubbles in the fuel supply line. Turns out the pre-filter o-ring was bad and was admitting air into the system.

Night and day performance difference.

I also did this to my 87 300TD a while back, same thing. Had air, after changing the hoses it ran 100% better.

What's your thing about leasing?
