W123 Turbo Question

I noticed that the turbo on my car has some side to side motion. I can feel it move, but can't see it move. There is no front to rear movement though.

Car has 300,000 on it.

Is it time for a rebuild? If so, who sells a good rebuilt turbo?

Thanks!

Yes. Why not do it yourself? As long as you mark it for balancing.....

Well, I do not have the balancing tools. I know it's more expensive to buy one. I would feel better about having one built by a good shop and a warranty.

You don't need balancing tools...that's why you mark it.

If there's no axial play and it's not sending oil into the compressor, I wouldn't touch it. Certainly not as a learning exercise.

There is no axial play, just felt side to side play.

Define rebuild. You can reseal a turbo but you probably can't check bearing surface specs nor balance the rotating assembly. An option is a rebuilt center section. Not much goes on with the compressor and turbine housings that you can't do yourself. I don't have faith in my eyes to realign an assembly balanced to 100K rpm.

I think a little side to side play is normal.

I was thinking that as well since it has to ride on a cushion of oil.
But, I have never removed, replaced or taken one apart, so I am no expert.

The only oil that get to it comes from the blow by.

Sixto, what kind of PITA is it, and what is ball park costs?

If it needs to be done, then I'll do it. If not, then I will wait.

Oh no, not true. It has its own supply line and a drain directly to the sump.

Well, it's just a very light film, and since the car does have blow by, I figured it was that.

I do know about the supply and return oil lines.

There is no burnt oil smell or blue smoke at the tail pipe.

t walgamuth, I think rrgrassi means blow by is the only oil going through the compressor to the intake manifold. Lube oil isn't leaking into the compressor.

I've never removed a 617 turbo but it can't be more difficult than a 'trapped' 603 turbo or a Mitsubishi TD04 in a transverse engine. I'll say index, index and index again so you can align everything properly. Mitsubishi has the sense to index turbo components so they go together one way. Not so these Garrett T3s. I put a 603 T3 back together minding my index marks and couldn't get the mixing pipe and crossover pipe to align with the compressor outlet. It took a bunch of trial and error to get the compressor housing clocked. And those are big honking pieces. If I can't get that right, there's no way I can realign a compressor wheel with itty bitty scribe marks.

A few years ago it cost about $400 to have a T3 rebuilt. I didn't price a rebuilt unit outright or exchange at the time.

It doesn't sound to me like you should worry about the turbo. If you remove the downpipe, peek into the turbine section for indication of oil leaks.
