Talking AWESOME

Beautiful car. As for your neighbours. Is it a 190D? If so, PLEASE let me know if they put a for sale sign in it!!

I would just love to have a classic Benz that is older than me.

That wouldn't be a problem for me. I don't exactly set acceleration records in any of my cars.

TX Bill,

Hoo Boy! What a gorgeous car! I wish they made more bright red interiors. It wasn't until the new SLK came out that they resumed the red.

I thought the fins were kinda pityful and not becoming a Mercedes. Actually I still do. But that is the only mistake they made-except maybe the shape of the instrument binnacle...

I love the contrast of the interior chrome and the bright red vinyl. You see this in the older SL's, but rarely in a sedan

As to funeral heases? I always thought they were great looking!

Say, you know, Mercedes used curtains in their cars too!

There comes a point where a car is dangerously slow.

Here in NJ, a Auto 240D is on the border of that. There are so many merging points with no merging lane here, or intersections that have stop signs that should have red lights, that you need a car that has atleast some "get up and go".

IMO, a 190D is dangerous to drive in today's traffic and highways. If you live in Alaska or North Dakota, OK. But in Texas or New Jersey? I don't think it would cut it.

TXBill,

Back in the late 70's, my oldest brother had a '62 220. I don't remember much of the car, but that it had 4-wheel disk brakes. I think all of the wood trim he was trying to restore is still in my mothers basment. It's what got me interested in Mercedes.

Actually, here in Texas, especially in the rural parts where I live, you are expected to use the shoulders for acceleration lanes, right hand turn lanes, and (ONLY) if the person ahead of you is making a left, a passing lane, the latter being acceptable only if it is safe. I've also been known to pull onto the shoulder and allow faster traffic to pass me if I'm not travelling the posted limit. I tend to expect the same in return from others, most of which do. The 81 Datsun diesel pickup that I sold when I bought the 240D had similar acceleration characteristics of the 190D. I simply pulled onto the shoulder, planted my foot to the floorboards, and allowed the truck to do its thing, shifting gears as needed. I had no problem merging into traffic in the metromess as well. People just simply change lanes and pass the slower traffic.

I've been all up and down the east coast, and know how insane people drive out there. They are acutally worse than Texas drivers from my experience. I don't mean any disrespect, but there isn't a place on the east coast that I would ever consider residing in. I'm not too fond of the population density, cost of living, nor the local governing agencies choices of road clearing materials in winter out there.

Well you are correct about us crazy drivers up here, and I am one who contribues to this theory ;x

I think the most aggressive drivers are from New Jersey, New York City and New England (MA, VT, NH), in my experience.

Actually, there is one place that has THE worst drivers along the entire east coast - Florida. I had to deliver in the Miami area, and while trying to get out of there, needed a left exit off of I95. Traffic REFUSED to open up, despite 2 MILES of signals, and attempts to merge into gaps in traffic. People there actually speed up to close off a gap that somebody is attempting to occupy. I finally had to resort to just forcing my way over, shoving out of the way whoever was in the lane beside me. Funny how they immediately started making gaps when I wanted to continue working my way to the left exit. I hated having to drive like that, especially since I was driving a vehicle capable of flattening just about anything else on the road.

Unhappy

California's just as bad. Worse, maybe...here, if you make someone mad enough, out comes the Uzi

Too few people these days have any common courtesy on the road...everyone's thinking for themselves and themselves only. Really makes me at times...

I've been a pro bus driver for 24 years here in CA. I am used to mergeing with a slow vehicle, so I don't get too mental about it, and I will say that CA drivers have been very courteous with buses, and merging issues.

My position has always been that if someone signals their intent to change lanes, they have the right of way and I allow them plenty of comfort room-they do have the right of way BTW. Let's face it folks, we all have to change lanes- so we all have been in the front position.

What burns me here in CA are the imported ethic of not yeilding when someone signals. This is definitely not a CA habit, just the opposite. In Mexico it is a sign of being non-macho. Therefore noone has the habit of signalling in Mexico. People from the east feel they are being intruded upon, so they don't yeild.
But, people from the east have an ingrained habit of signalling, due to the winter conditions demanding it. In the winter, you don't mess around with people on the road and everyone behaves and signals and cooperates. In the summer, people still signal, but misbehave,.

Do I have this right?

I agree with TurboDiesel.. perhaps if someone could stay within their subdivision.. or use back streets to get everywhere they needed to go it would be ok... but the highway designs and the over the speed limit drivers are making lots of cars unsafe for normal use... not just Old MB's.

ED, sure they are nice to you ... they know you have the weight advantage... and you can be seen from a long way off... but even just out on country roads with small hills and people going too fast it is wise to get up to speed reasonably fast here in the country.......

Diesel Power, Funny thing about that shoulder deal... there is a very nice shoulder on hw 95 going from Elgin to Taylor... and most people pull over if someone faster is coming up behind them... my aunt did that and got a ticket for being so courteous..... We were all shocked... LOL...

Ed, what company do you drive with? VTA?

I used to live in San Jose, and used to ride the city bus to and from school before I got my license (and afterwards, when the bloody car kept breaking down...line 64 all the way from the Almaden LRT station to Santa Clara and 24th St) I even applied for a job as a driver right after I turned 18. They didn't like my PR skills, though...

I got lucky in that aspect; I learned to drive from a former truck driver...so I maintain a lot of respect and courtesy for any heavy vehicles.

I was driving a '72 F-600 with bad brakes once, in Los Gatos, and a soccer mom in a Caravan decided to cut me off and slam her brakes...I almost went right through the little plastic minivan (the E-brake stopped me within inches of the bumper). And there were kids inside...I could see 'em. I still have nightmares about what could have happened...
