Start with battery and battery connections, fuses, etc.
Why did you put gas in your diesel car?

Good to know you got it running. For future reference, manual cars of almost any make and model can be push started rather easily. Most automatics lack this feature, but Mercedes included a rear transmission pump on many models that makes push starting possible. I believe a '78 automatic would include this feature, but I'm not sure.

Push starting won't help you if the glow plugs aren't working. You still have to get some heat in the chamber to light things off.
But if you have a starter failure (or loss of the associated wiring, NSS, etc) then yes you can push start the car. And M-B automatics of that vintage have a rear hydraulic pump that allows the car to be push started. Very rare to find an auto car that can be push started and the rear pump is what makes this possible.
