4-speed shift pattern problems...

Gears 3 and 4, straight up and down from neutral right? Okay, so..

If I move the stick all the way left until it stops, it won't move up or down. At first I thought I was missing 1 and 2.

However, If I move the stick slightly left from neutral but not enough to get to the stop, I can get it into 1 and 2.

Reverse is sketchy; pull up, left all the way, up... Works all the time. However, sometimes it will go into reverse without pulling up on the stick.

I could probably get used to it but I will always hate it.

Does this problem sound familiar to anyone? I always hear about linkage adjustments but I don't think it's that since once the gate is found, it goes into gear just fine.

Also, the lateral movement of the stick in neutral is not really straight across sideways, it feels more like an obstacle course...

i wouldn't discount the possibility that some part of the linkage is loose. there are a number of moving parts between the shift lever and the transmission. mine is a little iffy too and i am waiting to get it on a hoist so i can have a good look underneath at all the connections.

Awesome thread... looks like I'll take the shifter assembly out and spread it out across the coffee table.

Hopefully I can find whatever parts need to be replaced.

Also check the the levers on the transmission...they are 31-33a there is a bushing on each one...that goes bad....these can be seen under the car....I don't think you can see them through the top..

pull the boot and check for physical damage to the shifter apparatus.

Dont ask me how this happened, but the driver side horizontal end of my shift assembly was blown out completely, gear changes were clunky, reverse was hard to get into, but I never expected this level of damage to the actual shifter, or for the thing to be as usable as it is with all this stuff broken off and fallen out (spring).

all these parts were down between the carpet and tunnel on the inside of the center console.

Item 26a, the 2 springy washers are a PITA to get in and lined up as I remember.

The Shift Rods, items 31, 32 & 33, the screw on ends (item 34) are replaceable at $6 to $9 each depending where you buy them, or the bushing in the ends are replaceable, (item 36) and much cheaper.

Here is a link to a UK 190-E Forum. This is rebuilding the 5-spd shifter but more or less the same as the 4-spd shifter.

gearshift mechanism 16v

There is an up grade to replacing the bushings in the shifter with Bronze Bushings. they last longer and the are more positive.

Lengthen items 27, 28 & 29, and you can shorten the throw.

Sounds to me like the shifter keys (27,28 and 29) are somehow loose. Just take it apart- you'll figure it out. I was able to dig up things around the house to use for bushings if you can't wait for parts. When you get it fixed, you should be able to shift with two fingers.

Hey guys,

So I took it out tonight and it doesn't look quite like the one in the diagram.

Haven't taken it apart yet.

But the shift keys aren't loose, the bushings on either side of them don't look worn out.

The only thing that looks a bit sketchy is the top cap (#6) which has a bit of a gap below it.

Alright, I figured it out, turns out that the stick is going too far to the left.

I was able to "adjust" this stop limit with a hammer and a screw driver... Punching in the metal on the shift tube right below the compression spring perch on the shift lever. That way the spring perch hits the stop sooner.

Now it shifts perfectly...

You really should have used a rock in keeping with the caveman theme. Just teasing, of course. Great that you figured it out.
