W124 E300D Timing Chain Tensioner Replacement
Hello, I'm going to be renewing my chain tensioner tomorrow, I have the FSM instructions and they say to turn the engine to 0 degrees first, other posts/instructions (including my Haynes manual) I've seen don't mention needing to rotate the engine first- obviously not having to get under the car makes life easier so it would be preferable- anyone done this?
cheers.

[edit] I initially read the subject as new chain rather than new tensioner.
I suppose at TDC there is less tendency for the cams and IP to be off center as it were and tend to rotate to a relaxed position when chain tension is released. Sixto 87 300D |

Tensioner, not chain...

It may be simply to "center" the slack. Heck man, just bump it over until the dot on the balancer appears in the ring. Then R&R it.
