Mid-Atlantic Tour

Two trips to Montreal QE earlier this year have built a lot of confidence in the 300D. So tomorrow we will be departing for a 2,249 mile tour of the mid-Atlantic area in the 300D.

To record the journey I purchased a Video Camera Recorder and installed it behind the rear view mirror. We are planning to travel a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway and weather permitting I'm hoping for some good video. One of our stops is Asheville and from another thread on this forum there should be a supply of MB diesels and hippies waiting to be recorded.

If you spot a smoker with PA plates over the next week and a half wave, it might be me .

Where are you starting from? Philly?
That's where I'm embarking from on a 2,000 mile journey out to New Mexico on the 29th.

With two photographers in the car, we're going to get a lot of footage, I'm sure.

Have fun! And post a link to your video when you're done.

Day 1: We departed about 45 mins later than planned on Saturday and rand into heavy rain on the way to visit Monticello. With only 1 hour until Monticello closed we walked around and headed off to the Blue Ridge Parkway. After driving 500 feet on the Parkway we turned around. The fog was so heavy that it was both unsafe and no view to enjoy. Continuing to Roanoke VA where we stayed the night.

Day 2: What a difference - the sun was shining and it was great day. After breakfast we started on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Drove to Fancy Gap where we jumped back on highways for awhile. Back on the Parkway to drive and see the Linn Cove Viaduct (very cool). And again back on the highway towards Asheville NC. Along thee way the Benz odometer rolled over to 300,000 miles!

Day 3: a very deserved day of rest. Tomorrow its off too Nashville TN.

Bummer We are staying at the bent creek lodge. The plan for tomorrow is to head back downtown in the morning after breakfast before onto our next stop.

Day 4: Headed out to Nashville but decided to detour and visit Waynesville NC. Great town my wife and I fell in love. This is the kind of place I always hoped to retire . Next it was back on the highway and Nashville. Visited the tourist downtown before turning in.

Day 5: Doing a little tourist duty (including the Antique Archaeology - American Pickers - store) tonight it's off to eat at the Loveless Cafe and then enjoy Dave Mason at the barn.

Happy to report the Benz is purring like a kitten. I love this car!

Day 5 highlight: The loveless cafe show was great!

Day 6: Drove to the Grand Ole Opry, not being a big fan of country it was more to say I was there than anything . Then we visited Gaylord's Opryland Hotel. The inside of that place is simply amazing, well worth some time if your in the area. Then it was off to Memphis. After arriving we went out to the Cooper-Young area for a bite and drinks.

Day 7: Took the trolley to Beale St then visited the Rock n Soul museum, Graceland, Sun Records then back to Beale for some food.

Tomorrow it's back in the Benz for a quick drive over the mighty Mississippi and back (can't be this close and not drive over it), then off to Kentucky.

Day 8: We started off by finishing up some sight seeing. Then a quick drive into Arkansas (check off another state ). Onto Murray KY for a look at the town as a potential retirement location. Then back on the highway finally deciding to call it a day in Lexington KY.

Tomorrow through Cincinnati & Columbus Ohio, Wheeling West Virginia with plans for supper in Pittsburgh PA.

Trip Wrap Up: We rolled into the driveway this afternoon after our 2,500 mile trip. We visited 8 states (MD, WV, VA, NC, TN, AR, KY, OH) in 10 days before returning to PA.

The Merc performed flawless, consumed 75.623 gallons of fuel for an average of 33 MPG (I limited my max speed to 72 even in states w/a 70 MPH speed limit) and the car survived at least 4 road hazards with no known damage.

As for road debris there was a UFO in VA (even the video doesn't show anything), a squirrel crossing the highway, a block of wood and the below video showing a steel frame.

Here is a brief video of the rain that changed our plans on day 1.

How about some road debris .

And finally the only thing on the road slower than me.
