OM603 glow plug change

It's about time to change the glow plugs in my very dependable 350SDL. Access is tough.

Does anyone have any SERIOUS suggestions on ways to make OM603 glow plug service easier?

I am not looking for snarky-a$$ answers like "Have someone else do it."

Thank you

I have been advised that long 1/4"drive extensions are the easiest way, and one person has sent me a note suggesting change from underneath, which I don't consider easier.

Comments from the tech side welcome.

Thanks

If you're not removing the intake manifold, at least remove the cruise control actuator. It takes some dexterity to reconnect the IP links with access between manifold runners so get yourself some very long nose pliers or beefy hemostats.

Thanks for the good advice. I had been told it was possible to change the GPs without removing anything, but apparently this is NOT true?

It's a time and effort thing. I can probably replace all glow plugs without removing anything but I find it quicker overall to pull the cruise actuator. Maybe if I had longer fingers or ball-and-socket knuckles ...

well since the cruise does not work anyway, that's probably a good idea.

I need also to talk to someone about 126 vacuum problems and troubleshooting them, but one thing at a time.

Thanks!

A friend did mine while I was out of town. He left everything in place. He said the biggest trick to it was 1/4" extensions and a Universal Joint.

For me it's worth it to remove the intake manifold.

It does not take long. It's good to replace those gaskets once in a great while.

And, with plenty of room ( with the intake out of the way) you can be sure that you get the new plugs installed properly. And the wires back on correct.

I just finished my TD last night. with the injector lines still in place, but pulled the IM... STILL a pain... I cannot imagine doing it with IM still in place.
plus if you are pulling the plugs, you should be reaming the holes... blowing out the carbon.
bite the bullet, pull the IM. you're going to need a GOOD long 6mm allen key socket, and one with a ball end, and a lot of patience. also, the crossover gasket and IM gasket. a gasket scraper is also likely going to be needed. GENTLY, that head aluminum is soft!

I STRONGLY recommend you have a helper with a magnetic, CLAW to assist holding the bolts, as you remove them, to keep them from falling into the abiss...

I have one like this, with a magnet, and an led inside... wonderful tool
24" 2-in-1 Pickup Tool

Thanks for all the input. I think we'll start by removing the speed control and see if removal of the intake manifold is necessary too.

Thanks for the good advice!

I've found the amount of time I spend coming up with extensions or creative ways to get to the glow plugs, I could have just had the intake off and been done with the whole job long before.

Like Brian said the gasket probably hasn't been done in forever, and its a good chance to clean some carbon out of the runners.

Above vstech wrote to pull the IP. I think he meant IM.

Remove intake is the easiest way. I'd invest in some good hex head sockets. I bought a set of long hex head sockets but did not get a chance to use it. I reused my old gaskets because I didn't need the car to run the next day
if I ripped one so I gambled. I have a set sitting in the garage in case I have to yank the intake again.

I'd highly recommend replacing the shut off valved if you have not done so already as it's an opportune time to do so. Did my glow plugs and 3 weeks later the shut off valve died.
