A Detroit MB owner is this months winner of the DEMOLITION award.

This was at the metal scrap yard where he works (no camera or cell phones allowed in the yard).
He used a 50 ton forklift to raise only the front end, to look at the steering/suspension of his (new to him) W126 300SD.

He did not realize the fork was Lifting against the engine oil pan until the front tires where five feet off the ground.

Only the rear bumper was on the ground when I arrived to assess damage.
When he got my repair estimate, the car went in the crusher.

The damage list was:
* Ruined hood - radiator support.
* Broken oil pump.
* Broken upper oil pan.
* Crushed lower oil pan.
# The engine shocks where missing, appeared to have been removed long ago.
* Broken engine mounts.
* Broken power steering hoses.
* Broken oil cooler hoses.
* Broken fan blade and shroud.
* Broken radiator (transmission cooler ripped out).
* Buckled exhaust pipe.
* Broken fuel hoses (body to engine).
* Broken transmission mount.
* Broken valve cover.
* Seriously deformed transmission cross member.
* Broken drive shaft carrier bearing boot.
* Possible warped drive shaft.

Note:
The oil pan is NOT a body lift point !!!

Dang! I'd have liked a spare injection pump and lines. My Mom used to say "If it was raining soup I'd be standing there with a fork."

But it brings up a point. Has anyone ever done demo derby with a Benz Diesel? Tough body structure and an engine that's hard to stall once running - seems like a natural fit.

Although the rules might have changed (been out of it for a couple years), when I did destruction derby, only full size American built cars could be used. The only exception was that no Chrysler Imperial's were allowed. There are not too many full size American cars left. If they did change the rules to allow foreign makes, there are many 'Benzs & 'Bemers that would make good candidates, only after all the rust free removable parts (replaced with dented parts for the derby) and interior parts were offered here first. It would be sad to see a rust free SD being used for a D D, and find out all the windows were busted out and the interior thrown in a dumpster.

There was a required course in the Navy called "tools and their uses'. Showed the right and wrong tools for a job and the damage done by using the wrong tool for the job (screwdrivers as chisels, pry bars, drill bits as files, etc).

They didn't have one on floor jack vice fork lift......

Beats my letting the PS pulley grind into the oil cooler hoses. I didn't even blow the engine. Seats are out going to the local upholstery shop for some much needed care.

Bet you that idiot was crawling around underneath it too lifted up that high.

Reminds me of an old boss of mine who didn't understand why I freaked out when he let his 8 year old son lie underneath an engine hanging from a hydraulic hoist undoing oil pan bolts. Idiots born every day.

Guess that boss knew what the boy was worth! It's like putting the kids in the back of the pickup in Oklahoma. The dumb ones and the weak ones fall out. Keeps the gene pool strong.

I'd like to see the 50 TON forklift. I guess it would probably be like some of the ones we had at the lumber mill I worked at when I was a teenager. Still a wrecking ball doing a crowbar's job...
