Listen to this om603, tell me your thoughts.

Quick run from cold start of 87 300D - YouTube

Car sat for 2 years. Has been run a little but has been sitting a week before this start.

Typical 603 cold start and idle.

They do a bit better with a 35 second glow and they do much better if you bring them up to 1500 rpm for 30 seconds or so right on the start.

You do have a lifter or two that is not quite fully pressurizing with oil. Also typical of this engine...........and intermittent depending on variables that I could never quite pin down.

What you hear is why the "Afterglow" mod is popular. On the 87's, the plugs shut off once the car is running. On later cars they will stay on for up to 35seconds.

I have all the parts, but have yet to do the mod. It's on the list.

Your GP's are fine. If you had even one malfunctioning, the car would not start that easy.

Get that girl cleaned up and start driving her. The more I drive mine, the happier it runs.
Most days she is stuck on local duty. These cars were made to run.

notice the delay on oil pressure rise...

I bet there are no o-rings on the oil filter shaft.

Could you point out where to look and I'll check. One issue is that bouncing stop lever. I have the spring there to hold it up right now. When it bounces it of course makes the engine run like crap.

sometimes the bouncing stop lever is caused by a collapsed vent tube... or clogged up.
often, it's the shutoff actuator itself though...

as for the o-rings... pull the shaft out of the oil filter lid... at the bottom of the shaft there are two grooves for o-rings.
I use a 6mm ID by 2mm thick on the end, and a 7mm ID by 2mm thick on the upper groove. others use 6mm's for both ymmv...

Sweet, I'll check it as soon as I get home. Planing on pulling the dash today.

When I start my OM601 cold the oil pressure takes about 3.5-5 seconds to come up fully....always has. o-rings on the shaft are new. Currently it has one or more dead lifters and is rattling/knocking away at idle. Not driving it until I replace them soon.

I know of the orings, what I meant is whats that got to do with the slow rise in read oilpressure? Old rings dont allow the pressure to build properly in the pressure sensor housing?

That's what I heard. Or at least the other way - oil pressure builds up more quickly when plastic stiff o-rings are replaced with fresh rubber o-rings. It usually coincides with an oil change so maybe fresh oil builds pressure more quickly.
