W123 Dome light?

Are either the front or rear dome lights supposed to come on when a door is opened? On my 85 300d, it looks like the rear dome light is just operated by the rear doors, and the manual switch. The front light only comes on if I turn it on. Is this correct?

There should be a black switch that allows you to leave it off at all times, turn it on while sitting inside the car with the doors closed, or turn it on when the door opens if I'm not mistaken.

no.
the front light if the wheel is rotated all the way forward should turn on when the front doors are opened.
the rear is acting normal.

Since you have an '85 why not upgrade to the dome light with map light too.

Only '83 to '85 can fit them as the visor panel has the correct size for the updated light assembly.

I will have to look into it a little more. I did a continuity test on the door switches and they were all good. I haven't seen the map light option - would be nice.

On my 85, the light does not come on when the doors are opened. It used to, but it no longer does. Light does come on if I switch in on manually.

No idea of what changed or how to troubleshoot it.

So have you tried all positions of the dome light switch with doors both opened and closed?

Zacharias 10-16-2013 03:22 PM

^^^ what he said, for the first question.

Second question/observation, you just had bodywork done on that car, right? Bodyshops and electrical don't tend to mix well.

Did the shop spray over the door swtiches?

If they did work in the general area there (the switch isn't far from one of the usual rust pocket areas) they may have severed wire(s) or unplugged the switch.

Everything else working normally?

That's cool!

So, is it correct that this dome light (WITH the map light feature), was in

Mercedes W201, 190 E, 190 D Front dome light 0008209301 ?

Thanks,

Packman

My 123 had a broken piece of plastic in the wheel that prevented the contact from hitting the circuit board properly. Yes there is a circuit board in there, it runs the auto dim-out feature.

Door switches connect to ground so they should be ohm checked to ground at the connector (TK) at the light. TK means Tur Kontakt or Door Switch.

I have a spare dome with reading light i think if anyone is interested. You can find them most often in 1st gen 126's.
