240D transmission issues

Lately my transmission in my 240D has been acting up. I have had issues with really bad flaring from the 2-3 shift for about 6 months but now it is not downshifting from a stop unless I manually shift it. I have a line on a new transmission so I dont mind swapping but I wasn't quite ready for that. Any ideas as to what the issue is? This is from my 77 240D which doesn't have any vacuum controls for the transmission. The fluid level is good and doesn't smell burnt.

In general People say to change the Fluid and the Filter and see what happens.
At the least change the Filter.
That also allows you to see what is in the bottom of the Pan.

Member Stretch has a lot of experience with the Transmission and his German Language FSM has Transmission info.

I will next weekend... nothing left to lose on this transmission. I went to go fill it up this afternoon and it is now slipping too.

Are you checking the fluid when it is right at operating temperature and idling in park?

Fluid level on this year trans is soooo crucial....

You can try to unplug your kick down switch and see if there is any noticeable difference in shifting.....

There is also five shifter bushings on this transmission, two in the shifter, two in the rod from the trans to the shifter and one at the end of the Bowden/pressure control rod that hooks to the transmission....

And also confirm the linkage is all set to the FSM lengths....

Fluid has been checked when car is at operating temperature and on level ground. All of the bushings in the shifter and control rod are new. I don't think the kickdown switch is at fault since it will down shift if I press the go pedal enough to activate the switch.

Sounds like a band might be slipping. On mine, it was slipping because the friction material was gone. When you replace the filter, cut the old one open to see how much debris its sucked up. My tranny guy claims the filter can get plugged without there being visible debris in the oil.
