1977 300d head bolt question
Greetings,
Long story short, I'm in the middle of doing a head gasket job on my 1977 300d and I found that were the coolant had been leaking between the gasket and the block had lightly rusted/pitted a few of the head bolts. so I went down to the dealership and ordered up the 4 bolts I needed. Well they came in today but instead of being the allen head bolts like I have on my engine, they were the triple-square style. the parts guy told me that I could use both styles at the same time but, personally I would prefer to just have one style holding down the head seeing that they are torqued differently (the allens are done just by torque, while the triple-squares have an initial torque then an angle.) so this is my question: can I use both styles at once or should I/can I switch completely over to the triple-square style? any input here would be greatly appreciated. |

I'd get a full set of one type or the other.
you might want to go to a parts yard and snag some spares from a pre 79 motor.

Yeah, the guy said that even though he ordered the bolts using my VIN, the triple-square bolts are what came up as the right part number. He said that it's possible the allen heads are no longer available.

You might want to check with the Mercedes Classic Center in Irvine, Ca. Most dealers are not real good for any car older than 5 years.
