The reserve light should come on with ~2 gals remaining.

My 99 used to get between 30-32mpg on its 110 mile a day commute. That was 30 miles of heavy slow and go traffic and the rest at 70-80. B99 will drop that by 10% because the turbo will be on more often.
It is not the '98 W210, it is a '95 W124 with an OM606 (N/A).

extra fuel container

I hovered over my computer watching that auction and was tempted to throw a snipe bid also, but resisted that thought as my mind is on a wagon with a 606 in it right now
I would carry a small (1.6 gal) can of fuel - just in case. You don't want to run out of diesel and have to crank the engine to prime the system on one of these as there's no hand primer any more.
And you might add a can of Redline 85+ Cetane booster just to stretch the mileage a little, I use the stuff in cold weather on trips.
Let us know if and when you work on the Glow plug issue.

Well to be comfortable when doing a one tank run, make sure you have at least 2.5 gallon fuel can in the trunk. That way you won't be on pins and needles when that needle gets real low and the light has been on for a while. That makes driving a real pain in the butt. So take a can along, or buy one at a farm store, Wally world - but remember that they are getting difficult to purchase because the major mfgter, a plant in Oklahoma has discontinued production because of the numerous law suits generated by that little appliance. Make sure also that your can is capable of getting the fuel into the fuel tank tank.

That was my immediate thought as well, regardless of which 606 it was.

If run totally dry, a fresh battery to help re-prime could also be useful.....

Hahahah. Kerry.

<68 mph is right on. Set the cruise, put audio book on and roll.

That's excellent to know regarding the no hand pump, I won't let it go to the danger zone. I'm not interested in getting stuck.

Glow plug issue: I'm going to study the fsm on the plane to RI and see what I'm up against.

Terry,
Does this indicate that the fuel is pumping/priming an exhausted fuel supply, when in the glow plug starting key fob position on the W210 / 98'99 TDs before cranking?

Back the speed down a bit and you will probably make it. If you did it non-stop, you would really have some bragging rights.....
"80 mph" is an impressive speed to maintain for "700 miles." Is that the speed limit out your way, and do you really keep a speed of "80" for all those miles? Just wondering?

I doubt that I could maintain a speed of 80 mph without slowing down through cities and towns where the speed limit drops, although the speed limit is 80 mph for long stretches of I-20 and I-10 in West Texas where I run a lot.

Nope, it's crank, crank, crank on the OM606 (or any other OM60x). This is true for either W124 or W210 versions. The OM60X pumps do not have a hand primer.

I think only the CDIs have an electric fuel pump. (I can hear something whirring like a fuel pump when I start my wife's ML). The indirect 606s have a lift pump on the IP.

When I replaced all my fuel lines it took about 3 x 20 second crank cycles to bring it back to life. That was also with the injector nuts cracked since I had the hard lines off as well.

if, SHertex KNOWS the battery is a good one, having a 2 gallon tank of diesel fuel in the tank is good insurance. you'll feel the car start to lose power as your tank nears empty, just pull over, and dump the other 2 gallons in, and it'll crank right up, and get you 60 miles to the next fuel station!
FYI, TARGET has the best price on fuel cans... about 10.00 for a 5 gallon,
I'd pick up a target 1200 amp jump box from wallyworld before setting out too far. they make a HUGE difference on extended cranking.

heh...
since you now have the car, are you tempted to come down to the PNP here and get anything off the parts car?

As long as you know exactly how much reserve fuel you are carrying (2,5,etc gals.), you can still figure out the total miles with complete accuracy. There is no shame in carrying extra fuel, and we won't chastise you for not being brave by taking extra fuel just in case.
