1995 E300D Needs Injection Pump

So I'm considering a 95 E300 that needs an injection pump. $1800,00 which I'm of course going to try and get a better deal. Car has 211K on the clock. Clear coat on the car is toast around the deck lid and roof. No biggie as all can be fixed. Interior is nice. I'm just curious in 1995 did they introduce the electronic IP yet in first year production run of the 606? How much would a new IP cost me? Better to get a good (used) IP from another diesel? First time replacing an IP. Never had to on any of my other Diesels.

Unless I'm getting nothing right today, the 606 NA came with a mechanical IP.

Does it run at all? It might not be a bargain if getting it to run reveals transmission problems, suspension problems, AC problems...

How was it determined the Fuel Injection Pump was the Problem?

People including Mechanics tend to blame the Part that they don't know how to trouble shoot because they don't understand that Part or the System the supports it works.

+1 on this being a potential money pit.

I just went through the suspension refresh on my 124 wagon, not a trivial or inexpensive effort. I would get under the car and check over every rubber bushing on the front suspension (tie rod ends, ball joints, LCA bushings) and the rear suspension (link bushings, diff mounts, subframe bushings).

Then check the obvious, engine mounts, transmission mounts, flex disks, u-joints, center bearing, differential, cv joints.

If you get past all that, then the 1995 is the one and only year they provided an OM606 in North America with a mechanically controlled injection pump. There is the EDS system but that is just an idle speed/pollution control, that tweaks the rack to smooth out the idle and/or reduce pollution, similar to the OM603. The main control of the rack is still direct connected to the pedal.

Once the W210 came out for 96 they switched to the drive by wire pump. Then in 98-99 they added the turbo.

Are you sure the pump is toast or maybe is it something simple? The 606 has a myriad of fuel hoses, if one of them gets a pin hole (or its o-rings have failed) it will run like crap as it is ingesting air in the system.

Peeling clear coat on the later 124s (these were the first models with clear coat, the earlier 124s were traditional paint) is a common problem with this model.

Air conditioning, I would see if the system still has pressure on it. If it's still holding pressure you have a prayer that at least the lines, condenser, and evaporator are good. Compressor might still be shot, if so it is $400.

Transmission, well, about all you can do is drop the pan and check for crud, until you can get it to run.

Good luck but I would get them down below 1500, and that's only if the rubber bits below are in good shape. If you end up rebuilding the lower suspension figure you will spend north of $1000 for quality parts and a large amount of labor. A lot of that labor involves having special tools to press the bushings in and out.

You might get really lucky and get a good running daily driver after fixing a simple issue. Or you could put thousands in.

I have lived it, it's not just a fortune cookie:

I've rebuilt suspension before on my 1987 300E, so I could do that in my sleep along with the AC. We'll see, maybe I'll check it out and get it on a lift somehow and see what's up. I always do that before I get a car. If it's a junker, I'll just buy back my 99 E300 Turbo Diesel. I was highly educated with the 606 so I was hoping this might pan out.

I just removed and replaced my IP. It's not hard if you have the tools. You will need the IP locking tool and ITD basket. I have them for rent. Check out the thread below and then the link to the photos.

Thanks for future notice, I will let you know. I messaged that day and they told me the car was sold. I got so many projects around the house and a leaking head gasket to fix and the C230 so I'm glad I didn't buy this.

I did not. They said they had a seller and if it did not work out they would call me. I didn't receive a call. It's for sale again I saw recently. But it's too much of a project for me at the moment.
