engine shocks

Do the engine shocks on a 300SD control vibration when the engine is running, or are they mostly for controlling "bucking" when starting or
shutting down the motor?

I believe (hope!) they are to control the bucking. My 300SD is missing them, and it gives one big, UGLY kick every time I shut it down.

Yes.

The prime function is start, stop, idle (low RPM).

However they can damp a surprising percentage of higher (load) RPM vibration, If the shock and mount bushings are good.

If the engine is perfect there is little or no action, but if the engine/fuel system has minor/major issues they can be critical.

All of this assumes you have good condition, high quality engine mounts.

Air Cleaner Vibration

I only ask this because my wife's car keeps beaking the air cleaner mount.
Last time I reinforced the mount. That lasted about 2 years. Motor mounts were done about 6 years ago. The engine itself seems to idle as
good as mine in the TD and I still have my original air cleaner mount. After I fixed the mount last time the air cleaner still vibrated at a fairly high frequency, unlike mine that seems to vibrate at the same frequency as the motor. I just ordered a 10 dollar mount from Pelican to start anew.
We'll see if that fixes it.

After discussion on the phone.

Consulting their records showed the mounts where replaced in year 2000.

We covered much data on engine shocks, lower bushings, and upper mount.
* Insert a #2 pencil between the engine mount cup and engine mount arm, if it will not fit = the mount is junk.
Here is the bushing MB# 1232410565

We briefly discussed the rack damping pin.

so, what does that rack damper bolt (617) actually do?
