Manual Trans Gear Ratios
Some of the guys on my other forum <BangShift.com> are wondering what the ratios are in my '84 240D manual 4 speed. Pretty sure neutral is 0.00:1 and 4th. is almost certainly 1.00:1, but what about the others? They're not too concerned about reverse!
Hope someone has this - Dan |
Nitske says 3.90, 2.30, 1.41 and 1.00 forward with a 3.69 diff on the W115 and W123 240Ds. Is neutral a ratio?

I: 3.90; II: 2.30; III: 1.41; IV: 1.0; R: 3.66 The ratio is input : output so technically, neutral is 1:0. Now explain to your wife why she shouldn't park in infinity. |
I have the 1981 Mercedes data booklet for all passenger cars -- that lists three different variations of the 716, all with slightly different ratios, so I'll put those up shortly. I believe 1st ranges between 3.90:1 and 3.96:1.

716.005 and 716.006 up to April 1977: 3.90, 2.30, 1.41, 1. Rev 3.66.
716.006 starting May 1977 ("superhigh teeth"), and 716.007: 3.98, 2.29, 1.45, 1. Rev 3.74. 716.1: 3.96, 2.34, 1.44, 1. Rev 3.72. |
Thanks for the data! Sounds like there are some slight differences based on application but they're all in the same ballpark.
One of the guys on BS is thinking about a OM617 in an '83 T-Bird. Interesting swap! He was surprised that I found my manual trans from a 240D. Lots to learn in the Benz world! Dan |
