i built a w124 rear LCA inner bushing tool

Ok... the bushing is made of tinfoil pressed into tinfoil... I got a press fitting built and will proceed to change them out.

Wish me luck!

... ugh! it turns out that the tinfoil mount is also welded to tinfoil... I've destroyed jay bob's lower control arm... glad I've got spares... off to build a support for the cup...

I'll get pics of the carnage, and the remedy...

yeah... I tried using sockets... the tube is only supported on the arm side, the other side is free... I put pressure on the bushing, and the arm metal just started wrinkling... I gotta support the tube.

Take the control arms and new bushings into a shop with a press, hand over $10, return 15 minutes later to collect newly pressed in bushings.

You're welcome America.

That requires a spring compressor and a lot more work for something you can do in an hour. Jeremy has a thread on using easily found items - http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/301701-home-made-$15-w124-lca-bushing-tool.html

The rear springs do not need a spring compressor in a 124/201

here's a few pics.

#1 shows the damage from using a socket on the control arm to press out the old bushing.
2 shows how it looks undamaged
3 is a close up of some damage caused by worn bushings, and contact with the subframe
4 is the other arm showing more damage from contact due to worn bushings
5 is a new bushing with my fresh new tool attached ready to push into the arm.

another set of pics

#1 shows the inside of my new tool
2 shows the end of the new bushing notice the 3 rubber points on the end
3 shows the other end of the new bushing this side does not have them.
the tool fits into the side without the 3 points
4 shows the original bushing, I figure I'll cut off the aluminum protrusion so I can properly support this end with part 2 of my new tool... not yet out of the machine shop yet.
5 shows the end I'll push ON with my tool, it'll dig into the bushing and seat on it's edge to push on the outer edge of the bushing, and slide out the other end.

Oh sorry - thought it was a BBQ.

Actually thinking about it that's not a bad place for a BBQ grill - load up the back of the truck with dead cow - pop down the tail gate and start a fire...
