so... my brother went and bought an 02 sprinter

he calls me up and asks;
"what do you know about the 02 sprinter with the inline 5cyl motor?"

I respond;
um... it's got a mercedes diesel engine.

he says;
"is it a good vehicle? under 200K on the clock"

I tell him, "I know it has a mercedes diesel engine"
it should be good for 400+Miles with decent service.
more if it's WELL taken care of.

he says...
"ok, so when can you start taking care of it?"

he calls me from the guy's yard the truck is in, and says it drives well, but it's got fuel dripping from the front of the motor.
I pop online quickly and research the om612 motor (where did MB come up with THAT number?) find that the high pressure pump is prone to leaking, and that seals and fittings need changing with special anerobic sealant for reassembling the WELL CLEANED parts... and quote him a price for sealing up the pump... he agrees, and snaggs the truck and drives it back to charlotte to plan the repairs...

from Mt Olive NC...

He freaking drove to Mt OLIVE to look at a truck for sale.
wow.

Does this thing have rust around any of the windows? I've noticed a lot of Sprinters suffering from this, especially in the rear, and it looks like a pain to fix.

wow.
So, what's the upshot of the truck? What's he going to use the truck for and is he famiilar with working on one, or what?

Not knowing what part your Brother wants you to play, but, my older Brother is a doctor, and for the past 35 yrs. has always seemed to have a propensity to involve me in his financial/mechanical & residential construction planning, including vehicles, for some unknown reason over the years.....

Pictures, of course of Bro's van.......?

I've got my eye on the DRW 3500 MB Sprinter in general......but frankly, mostly well-satisfied with my Ford E450 7.3 liter Powerstroke for the forseeable future - to even plan a change.

Hopefully it was a good purchase. We love our 03, its been mostly dependable, but Sprinters can be expensive maintenance nightmares if they haven't been properly taken care of- just ask my friend who had the transmission go out on his because of voltage issues to its computer after he had the alternator replaced with a cheapo one from some local autoparts store. Mechanic estimated around $6k-$7k to have it rebuilt.

well, he just sprung this on me yesterday, I've not seen the truck yet.
he was stoked that it's under 200K for sale... all the other ones in the price range were over 500K...
only thing is... on the drive back to Charlotte, he got a warning light... it said High Oil pressure... I assume this is fuel related? any clues?

If you use 15w40 oil in them it will make the pressure too high. In fact, if you use 15w40 in the winter the pressure can get so high it makes the oil filter explode!

wow. so actually the motor oil is reading too high...

the filter can explode? so, I'm guessing it's not a cast aluminum filter casing with replaceable elements... like the 61x/60x MB engines I'm used to...

Hard to find around here with low mileage and a good price. Thought about one last year. 140k miles but $14k (I think). See them with 800k miles and $8k.
