I just changed to Rotella 5-40 synthetic myself and the car starts and idles much better.

I put two gallons in my OM617s. I see no point in keeping around a bunch of gallon jugs with only a quart in them.

Theoretically too much oil can be hit by the crank, which whips it into a froth, and then pumps frothy oil to your bearings instead of liquid oil.

Does anyone else here think that 8 instead of 7 quarts is definitively a bad practice in an OM617.952? If so, then I may need to change my oiling habits.
