1980 300CD No Heat what to do?

I know there is a lot of info on here and the web about the crappy ACCI1 system MB used in these cars. I am looking for input on what should be done with my car to get heat and to eventually fix the system.

First off, here is what is currently happening. My 80 Has NO HEAT. The Blower motor works on def, hi,and low. The AC did not seem to work this summer.
No heat was not a problem this summer but now with days in the 20F range it is really no fun to run this car. Beats riding my motorcycle but not exactly a fun experience.

The car sat unused for 10 years before I got it.

Here are my options as I see them.

1) Go through and trouble shoot the system

2) There is a guy on CL parting out a few 240 D's with he manual setups. He wants 200 dollars for a complete take out with heater core and under dash box and all associated parts.

Problem is it is pretty cold out right now so doing the swap is not something I am looking forward to. I have done a lot of heavy mechanical work including axle swaps, diesel conversions, engine swaps etc so I am sure Swaping the climate control is something I can do.

What would you guys recommend?

Thinking of doing this as a temp fix to get through the winter:

Thanks for the input.

Ian

The bypass fix is a bit ghetto, but should work just fine. It's very likely what I'll end up doing when my monovalve (which has been iffy for the last several years) fails completely. If you want to go a little more Gucci, buy the parts for the full manual conversion and maybe do the bypass to get you through this winter and install the manual conversion in the coming spring after it warms up a bit. I've seen the DIY guide for it, and I wouldn't call it a huge job, but I would expect to spend a full day on it. I have no love for automatic temperature control in any automotive platform and would never spend more than a couple bucks to keep it working to spec.

The PO in my car did the bypass you only have heat solution in my 1978 300D and it works fine. I am not going to bother fixing the ACC becuae even when it works the unit sucks. The only annoying thing is now I only have "460" air. Open all 4 windows, go 60, and you have air.

At some point when I have the money I will convert it to a manual unit like it should have been in the first place

First read up about how the system works...

1971 Chrysler Imperial Auto-Temp 2 Service Reference Guide - Session 281

Then deicide if you want to repair it or switch to a manual system......I love my system and have had no issues for 2 years since I repaired it....its very interesting...in my eye....

The Evil Servo and later the DaimlerChrysler partnership is evidence to me that people who don't know history are doomed to repeat it.

Hey Ian -- we're supposed to have nice weather this Friday & Saturday. If you can work then, you might find more pleasant working conditions .
