diesel compression tester advice
Hi all
has anyone bought/used the diesel compression tester from harbor freight?http://www.harborfreight.com/12-piece-diesel-engine-compression-tester-93644.html(i think i have a bad head gasket) i have a om602 engine in a 92 124 and was wondering if this tester is worth the time/money to get and if so does it come with the right adapter for use with my engine, the guy in washington state has one for about double the price,but i dont think his comes with the right adapter for use in my engine. i also checked around for one to rent or borrow,and no luck(including here at peachparts) any thoughts? |

I use mine on a 617 engine so I can't speak from first hand knowledge about the 602, but I'm sure someone will chime in on that aspect.

I used my Harbor Freight tester just the other day on my 1981 diesel engine. It looks slightly different than the 93644 one. I bought it ~3 yrs ago. I don't know how it works on your engine, but if the injectors are the same, and you have a straight shot down to them (remove your intake?), it should fit. I don't know how "absolutely right" it measures, since the compressed volume in a diesel is very small, so any slight difference matters. I measured 400-410 psi in all 5 cylinders, but when I tried with an old heat shield installed, I measured less, (~375 psi). Seems like if the "injector simulator" seals on the tapered edge, having a heat shield in would decrease the volume and increase pressure. No instructions, so I figured w/o heat shield was the correct method. With the hollow ring on, the injector simulator looks identical in dimensions to a Bosch injector body. I did have trouble with the quick-connect popping off, so had to hold it down with my hand while my wife turned the key. That is an easy fitting to find, so could be changed. I never tried the glow plug adapter, since that would be harder to install, though might give more representative pressures.

I have one of these, took 2x to get a good one. Used on 617 and 603.

hey all
thanks for the replys so when you guys are saying getting a good one you had to take it back to the store? might seem like a dumb question but how did you know the one you had was a bad one? cheers kenny |

Bad = results not repeatable.
I just got a used one and it came with a 617 proper connection. I had no concern in buying this as I got some very very nice gauges from ebay for cheeep.

It does not seem to have the proper injector adapter for my OM602 Turbo.

Horbor Freight tester
For the 617.952 Engines the Injector Adapter has a big empty space in it and that would decrease your measured pressure a bit. The Glow Plug Adapter is more accurate as it does not have the dead empty space like the Injector Adapter but the angled connector for that is fragile. If you have a problem with the tester it is often the Tire Valve Stem type Schrader Valve/s that are the problem. At least one Member said the Gauge was not accurate when compared to another better quality Gauge. Even with all of the above issues I have a Harbor Freight Compression Tester but have not used it. On sale it was about $27. I figure the adaptersa by themselves are worth that much.

i went ahead and got the harbor freight one and ran my test i got over 200psi across all 5 cylinders,with the #5 cylinder spewing a bunch of ant-freeze so i am going to take the head off and see whats up i also had #4 glow plug broke and a bunch of oil in #2 cylinder at the intake

Used ebay can get you a quality unit cheap at times. Proper way to test compression would be with a injector gasket installed.

Did you stop fuel flow through the injectors while testing? 200 psi is way low but I don't think fuel is the difference.

What is one expecting to learn from compression testing an engine that has "a bunch of oil" in one cylinder, and coolant "spewing out" of another?

i had the stop lever down, do i need to do something else to stop the fuel from going thru the injectors? does having fuel go thru the injectors affect the compression check?
