Toyota 4Runner 1988 OM616 swap

Hello everyone, I am very happy to become a member here, hope to get a lot info since my new engine is a Merc OM616 in my 4Runner. here is the progress of my swap

here are few pics of the last moments of 3vze under the hood. byebye 3vze, you sputtering bastard

first we've put om616 on the motorcycle lift, leveled it and started to prepare the adapter plate and all other things

as you can see, unlike on the om617, on om616 oil filter housing gets in the way for the adapter plate so i had to remove it, will get to it later

here is the distance plate for the flywheel

it will be easy to get the holes out of that one

and the last one for today with plate leveled up with the tranny, ive also made some punchmark tools and got the holes marked for tomorrows drilling etc.

a bit of progress

Welcome! Nice job with the adapter plate!
What gears are you going to be running?

I can tell you personally that I have considerably smaller tires and I needed a 4.56 diff to get my swap to just under an automatic 240D in speed.

With the 4x4 and beefy tires you have, id probably want to be past 5. Something to actually move reasonably

Nice work! Unfortunately, you're going to be under powered IMHO. Good thing is your adapter plates should work with an OM617.

i am not going turbo with this, if i ever wnt to have more power i will put an 617 in

today i have been manufacturing some engine mounts, ill take pics tomorrow. there are many things left but i am getting there slowly. next thing on the list is oil pan and the oil intake .

Looks great, nice work!

How are your calculations panning out?

I have a 240D, with a manual. It runs great, pushing about 3500 lbs.

The G Wagen, is around 5500 lbs, running a 617, is a bit of a slug, although the manual tranny helps some.

With your 4Runner, I'm wondering what the power to weight ratio will be like...

It looks great

If you want to buy a premade oil filter re locator these guys are fairly priced: Oil System Accessories

But it looks like you can zap one together yourself judging by the plate work

I would ditch the fan for an electric unit, and make sure to double check your pump timing for maximum torque.

Awesome job!

I swapped a 617 into a '90 Yota Pickup.

With the right gearing, your 616 will putt around town and crawl around the trails just fine. You will want more power for climbing hills on the roads and pulling loads.

Was going to put a 616 in a Toyota pickup, but ended up just getting a 240 instead. I did turbo it, would not be without the turbo, really makes a nice engine out of it.

Looking great! You a cruising right along!

I like your motor mount arrangement

Note on the remote oil filter for when its up and running (if you are using a hanging canister)- I have one of those in my van currently, and when you go to change the oil, make sure to fill up the new filter canister with oil before screwing it on, like a diesel fuel filter

The first oil change I almost freaked out as the engine ran for what seemed an extended pump up period over normal with no oil pressure, like 5 times longer than the stock filter. However, if you screw on an new canister full of oil, it starts and pressurizes about the same as stock.

Some people say I'm OCD about it, but when priming after an oil change I like to hold the shutoff switch until I get pressure (or floor it on an OBII vehicle) that way you're supposedly easier on the engine until oil is circulating. Should I even both on 200k+ motors? Debatable, but I sleep well at night. I'm also the guy who idles for at least 2 minutes on a cold takeoff (longer in the winter).
