No, that is normal. As ichris said, check battery voltage before and during glow plug cycle. It really sounds like a low/weak/damaged battery is causing your problem.

If the battery is still pretty full, it may be worth trying to add some more amps by jumping it with your altima now that it won't take the full brunt.

I agree, check battery voltage while cranking. Your battery was very seriously dead and you said it sat that way for days. Just the fact that a trickle charger got it to "full" in a few hours is a bad sign.

There's no way that battery isn't compromised

Not sure what the set up is in one of those new-fangled mercedes.... but last time I changed my glow plugs in the SD, I removed the fuel rails first. Made the job 10 times easier and faster, and I was absolutely sure that all the wires were tight at the plug. This was not the case the first time I replaced them, and caused me all kinds of grief. I would suggest making sure that all glow plugs have a good solid connection.

If you remove the Fuel Injection Hard Lines the Air will bleed out of the with less Starter Cranking if you leave the Line Nuts loose at the Injectors and crank till you see Fuel coming out of them.
Especially with the newer Diesels with their longer Fuel Injection Hard Lines.
